Graham Harrell: “I’m Returning to Redeem the Reputation of My Team”

Legendary QB Comes Home as Texas Tech’s New Offensive Coordinator

LUBBOCK, Texas — In a bold and emotional statement, former Texas Tech quarterback legend Graham Harrell announced, “I’m returning to redeem the reputation of my team,” following Texas Tech Football’s official announcement of his appointment as the program’s new offensive coordinator.

The move marks a significant moment in the Red Raiders’ football history as Harrell, one of the most iconic figures in the program’s storied past, returns home with a renewed mission — not only to elevate the offense, but to restore pride in a program that has struggled with consistency in recent years.

“This place made me who I am,” Harrell said during his introductory press conference. “I owe Texas Tech everything. Now, it’s time to give back and get this thing back on track.”

Harrell starred as the Red Raiders’ quarterback from 2005 to 2008, where he shattered records and defined the Mike Leach era of high-octane offense. His name still resonates in Lubbock, particularly for his legendary 2008 game-winning touchdown pass to Michael Crabtree that stunned No. 1 Texas. Now, he returns not as a player, but as a leader with a vision.

“I’m not coming back for nostalgia,” Harrell emphasized. “This is about the future. It’s about building an offense that strikes fear again, that makes people circle us on the schedule.”

Texas Tech Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt said the decision was a natural one: “Graham Harrell is Texas Tech. His mind for the game, his passion for this university, and his experience at the highest levels of college football make him the perfect fit.”

Harrell brings with him a wealth of coaching experience, including offensive coordinator roles at North Texas, USC, and most recently, Purdue. Known for his Air Raid roots and quarterback development prowess, Harrell is expected to immediately revitalize an offense that ranked in the bottom half of the Big 12 last season.

“I know what this offense can be,” Harrell said. “We’re going to spread the field, play fast, and bring excitement back to Lubbock.”

While expectations will be high, Harrell remains grounded. “We’re not here to make promises,” he said. “We’re here to work — to earn back respect, to earn back wins, and to represent Texas Tech with the fight it deserves.”

For Red Raider fans, the homecoming of No. 6 is more than symbolic. It’s a spark of hope that the future might once again resemble the glory days.
