Javier Mascherano, a former Liverpool midfielder, has been appointed as the new head coach of Major League Soccer side Inter Miami. The news, shared by journalist Cesar Luis Merlo on Twitter, confirms that the Argentinian tactician will join his compatriot Lionel Messi at the club, co-owned by football legend David Beckham. Mascherano has signed a long-term contract, marking a significant new chapter in his coaching career.
Prior to this role, Mascherano served as the head coach of Argentina’s U-20 team, a position he held since 2021. He also led the national team during the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup, which Argentina hosted after Indonesia’s late withdrawal. While his team impressed in the group stage with dominant victories over Uzbekistan, Guatemala, and New Zealand, they faltered in the Round of 16, losing 2-0 to Nigeria. Similarly, at the Olympics, his side exited in the quarter-finals after a narrow defeat to France, despite commendable performances in the group stage.
Now at Inter Miami, Mascherano faces one of the most challenging assignments in global football. The club, which boasts stars like Messi, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and recent addition Luis Suarez, experienced a rollercoaster season. Despite finishing atop the MLS Eastern Conference with a comfortable lead, they suffered a shocking first-round playoff exit to Atlanta United, losing the decisive game 3-2 on home turf.
Mascherano’s deep connection with Messi, forged during their successful years together at Barcelona and with Argentina, could prove pivotal.
