Since his high-profile transfer from Manchester City to Chelsea in 2023, Cole Palmer has experienced an extraordinary ascent in his professional career. Joining Chelsea at 22, Palmer quickly established himself as a standout player, earning the Premier League and PFA Young Player of the Season honors. His debut season saw him rack up an impressive 22 goals and 11 assists, remarkable statistics given Chelsea’s challenging season. This impressive contribution has cemented his reputation as one of the league’s rising stars and validated Chelsea’s significant investment in him.

Under the guidance of new manager Enzo Maresca, Palmer has continued his momentum, starting the current campaign with a remarkable seven goals and five assists, helping Chelsea emerge as a strong contender for a top-four Premier League finish. His talent and dedication have earned him the 18th spot on FourFourTwo’s ranking of the best players worldwide. Palmer’s journey to Chelsea, which involved a £40 million move, marked a bold step outside his comfort zone in pursuit of consistent first-team action.

Despite Riyad Mahrez’s departure from Manchester City, Pep Guardiola was unable to guarantee Palmer the regular playing time he desired, ultimately leading to his move on the final day of the summer 2023 transfer window. In a revealing interview with GQ, Palmer disclosed that joining Chelsea wasn’t originally his plan; he had been set on a loan instead. “I wasn’t even gonna go to Chelsea,” Palmer admitted. “I got persuaded.” He went on to explain that his desire to play regularly grew stronger during England youth camps, where he observed fellow young players competing weekly in the Premier League.

Reflecting on the build-up to his transfer, Palmer recounted a training session when he learned of Chelsea’s serious interest. “I remember training on a Wednesday at City in the afternoon, and the news was ‘they’re trying to agree a fee.’ Every time the ball went out, I’d ask the kit man or the doctor if they’d agreed the fee yet.” The deal quickly materialized, and Palmer debuted for Chelsea just a day later against Nottingham Forest. Since then, he has solidified his role as a key player for the club. His exceptional performances have significantly raised his market value on Transfermarkt to €90 million, and for now, a departure from Stamford Bridge appears highly unlikely in the eyes of many, including FourFourTwo.
