“Statistically, He’s Not”: Myles Garrett Not Better Than Steelers Star T.J. Watt, According to Analysts
In the ongoing debate over who reigns supreme among NFL defensive stars, recent analysis has reignited the rivalry between two AFC North powerhouses. A growing number of analysts and fans are siding with Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt over Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett — and the numbers back them up.
Despite Garrett’s undeniable talent and physical dominance, critics argue that Watt’s production tells a clearer story. “Statistically, he’s not better than T.J. Watt,” NFL insider Marcus Whitman said during a recent appearance on a national podcast, pointing to Watt’s unmatched consistency and disruptive ability.
Watt, the 2021 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, has racked up 96.5 sacks in just seven seasons — compared to Garrett’s 88.5 in the same span. But it’s not just about sacks. Watt leads in forced fumbles (27 to Garrett’s 16), tackles for loss (104 vs. 94), and quarterback hits. Most importantly, Watt has proven to be a game-changer in clutch moments, often sealing victories with key defensive plays.
“When you’re talking about who affects winning more, it’s Watt. He doesn’t just pile stats — he makes impact plays when it matters most,” said former Steelers linebacker Ryan Clark.
Garrett, who recently earned his first Defensive Player of the Year honor in 2023, is no slouch. But his critics argue that while he often wins with eye-popping pass rush moves, the Browns’ lack of postseason success and his lower impact on turnovers have hurt his standing in comparisons.
The debate is far from over, especially as both stars enter the 2025 NFL season healthy and hungry. But as of now, the consensus in many NFL circles is clear: in terms of pure production and clutch impact, T.J. Watt holds the statistical edge — and the bragging rights.
