UNC Baseball Among Favorites to Win College World Series

The University of North Carolina Tar Heels are firmly in the national spotlight as one of the favorites to win the 2025 College World Series. With a combination of elite pitching, consistent offense, and postseason experience, UNC enters Omaha with momentum and a roster capable of capturing the program’s first national championship since 1989.

The Tar Heels, who dominated the ACC Tournament and earned a top national seed in the NCAA Tournament, have been one of the most balanced teams in the country throughout the season. Their success has been fueled by a deep pitching staff led by ace right-hander Cade Fisher and dominant closer Jackson Thompson. Fisher, a junior with a fastball touching 96 mph and elite command, has been nearly untouchable down the stretch, while Thompson boasts one of the nation’s best ERAs and leads the ACC in saves.

At the plate, UNC has thrived on timely hitting and disciplined approaches. Sophomore slugger Tyler Watkins leads the team in home runs and RBIs, while senior captain Drew Martin provides veteran leadership and clutch performances. The lineup, which averages over six runs per game, has proven capable of producing against top-tier arms.

UNC’s path to Omaha included a regional title in Chapel Hill, where they defeated Oregon and Coastal Carolina, followed by a Super Regional sweep over Arkansas in Fayetteville. Their impressive postseason run has only solidified their status as a team to watch.

Head coach Scott Forbes, in his fifth season at the helm, has built a team that blends experience, talent, and resilience. “This group has faced adversity and answered every challenge,” Forbes said. “We’re not just happy to be in Omaha — we’re here to win it.”

The Tar Heels are making their 12th appearance in the College World Series and first since 2018. They’ll face tough competition, including perennial powers LSU, Tennessee, and Stanford, but analysts agree UNC has the tools to contend. ESPN college baseball analyst Kyle Peterson recently called the Tar Heels “a complete team with Omaha-tested pitching and the type of offensive depth you need to survive the gauntlet.”

With a devoted fan base, strong leadership, and a hunger to make history, UNC enters the College World Series not as an underdog, but as a legitimate favorite. If their recent play is any indication, the Tar Heels are ready to turn their potential into a championship — and bring a national title back to Chapel Hill.
