Manchester United and Barcelona are reportedly in discussions over a potential swap deal involving Marcus Rashford, who appears to be edging closer to an Old Trafford exit. Recent reports suggest that the Red Devils are open to offers for the England forward in the January transfer window, having already considered his sale during the summer.

Rashford’s situation at Manchester United has grown increasingly uncertain under new manager Ruben Amorim. The forward, alongside teammate Alejandro Garnacho, was omitted from the squad for the recent Manchester derby due to concerns over their attitude. In an interview on Tuesday, Rashford expressed his desire for a “new challenge,” signaling his readiness to leave the club.

Despite Rashford’s comments, Amorim attempted to downplay the situation during a press conference on Wednesday, emphasizing that Manchester United would benefit from retaining a player of Rashford’s caliber. However, fresh reports from Spain reveal that the club is actively negotiating a swap deal with Barcelona, which could see Rashford head to the Camp Nou while Frenkie de Jong moves in the opposite direction.

Manchester United have shown a strong interest in De Jong, with the Dutch midfielder starting only two matches in all competitions this season under Barcelona boss Hansi Flick. De Jong, once a key target for former United manager Erik ten Hag, is now being described as a “hot potato” at Barcelona, where the Catalan giants are reportedly working to offload their highest-paid player. Amorim also views De Jong as a potential asset to strengthen United’s midfield, aligning with his long-term vision for the team.

According to reports, Rashford has been presented to Barcelona president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco as part of the proposed deal. Amorim, for his part, appears keen for Rashford to depart, using the forward as a “bargaining chip” to secure De Jong’s services.

BBC Sport’s chief football news reporter Simon Stone commented on Amorim’s handling of the situation, suggesting that the manager has balanced his statements carefully to maintain control over an already delicate issue. Stone noted that Amorim has acknowledged Rashford’s immense talent, describing him as a “big talent” crucial for the team, but actions, not words, will ultimately reveal the manager’s intentions.

Amorim has made it clear that all players must meet his standards to be considered for selection. Rashford and Garnacho will reportedly be evaluated based on their training performances ahead of upcoming fixtures, including an EFL Cup clash against Tottenham. Should Rashford fail to meet the manager’s expectations, he could remain sidelined despite recovering from the illness that kept him out of training earlier in the week.

Looking ahead, United face a challenging schedule with Premier League matches against Bournemouth, Wolves, and Newcastle. These games are likely to determine Rashford’s role in Amorim’s plans. If the forward fails to meet the high standards demanded by his new boss, his days at Old Trafford could be numbered, paving the way for a high-profile move to Barcelona in January.
