On3’s J.D. PicKell Talks Sherrone Moore Suspension, Michigan Outlook and More
In a recent episode of The Hard Count, On3’s J.D. PicKell broke down the latest developments surrounding the Michigan football program, including the suspension of new head coach Sherrone Moore and what it means for the Wolverines moving forward.
Moore, who took over after Jim Harbaugh left for the NFL, is reportedly facing a one-game suspension due to a recruiting violation that occurred during Harbaugh’s tenure. While the NCAA has not made a formal announcement, reports suggest Moore will serve the suspension during Michigan’s non-conference slate. PicKell emphasized that while the suspension is minor in the grand scheme, it is nonetheless an early test for Moore in his first season at the helm.
“This isn’t a long-term issue for Michigan,” PicKell said. “But anytime your head coach is not on the sidelines, even for one game, it presents challenges — especially when you’re trying to establish a new identity.”
Despite the suspension, PicKell expressed optimism about Michigan’s prospects in 2025. He highlighted Moore’s strong rapport with the players, his background as a successful offensive coordinator, and the continuity within the coaching staff as key reasons for optimism.
“Sherrone Moore has already earned the respect of this locker room,” PicKell said. “This team has veteran leadership, a talented roster, and a culture that’s been built over the last few years. That’s not going to disappear just because Jim Harbaugh is gone.”
Michigan is coming off a national championship season and enters 2025 with high expectations. PicKell acknowledged the program may experience some transition pains, especially with a new quarterback under center and a few key departures to the NFL. However, he maintained that the Wolverines remain one of the Big Ten’s top contenders.
He also addressed the broader picture, noting the increasing competitiveness of the expanded Big Ten, which now includes USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington. According to PicKell, Michigan’s success in navigating this tougher conference landscape will hinge on Moore’s ability to maintain the program’s physical identity and strong player development.
“The question isn’t whether Michigan is going to fall off — it’s whether they can continue to operate at the elite level they’ve reached,” PicKell said. “And so far, there’s reason to believe they can.”
As the Wolverines gear up for the fall, all eyes will be on Moore to see how he handles his first season in charge — starting with how the team responds during his brief absence.
