Steve Casula Promoted to Co-Offensive Coordinator, Six Michigan Assistant Coaches Receive Contract Extensions

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan football program has announced a significant update to its coaching staff, promoting tight ends coach Steve Casula to the role of co-offensive coordinator. The move comes as part of a broader staff restructuring following an impressive 2024 season and national championship win under head coach Sherrone Moore.

Casula, who joined the Wolverines in 2023 as an analyst before being elevated to tight ends coach in 2024, has quickly earned a reputation as a sharp offensive mind and a strong developer of talent. His promotion to co-offensive coordinator reflects Michigan’s commitment to continuity and innovation on offense, especially as the team prepares to defend its title in the upcoming season.

In addition to Casula’s promotion, six assistant coaches received contract extensions, further solidifying Moore’s coaching core heading into the 2025 season. The university confirmed that the extensions include key figures on both sides of the ball, underlining the program’s confidence in its current staff.

The six coaches receiving extensions are:

  • Ben Herbert (Strength and Conditioning Coach): Widely regarded as one of the top strength coaches in the nation, Herbert has played a crucial role in Michigan’s physical identity and overall player development.
  • Jay Harbaugh (Special Teams Coordinator/Safeties Coach): A long-tenured assistant and the son of former head coach Jim Harbaugh, Jay has been instrumental in the Wolverines’ consistent special teams success.
  • Mike Hart (Running Backs Coach): The former Michigan star continues to shape one of the country’s most productive rushing units, developing backs who consistently contribute at elite levels.
  • Ron Bellamy (Wide Receivers Coach): A former Wolverine himself, Bellamy has proven adept at cultivating young receiving talent and maintaining Michigan’s aerial threat.
  • Mike Elston (Defensive Line Coach): Elston has built a dominant defensive front, which has been critical in Michigan’s recent playoff runs.
  • Kirk Campbell (Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach): With the promotion of Casula to co-OC, Campbell will now share coordinating duties. He has played a vital role in quarterback development and offensive game planning.

Head coach Sherrone Moore emphasized the importance of retaining key staff members to maintain the program’s upward trajectory.

“We’re building something special here in Ann Arbor, and continuity is a big part of that,” Moore said in a statement. “These coaches have been instrumental in our success, and I’m excited to move forward with this group as we chase another championship.”

The announcements come as the Wolverines enter offseason preparations with high expectations and a coaching staff now firmly aligned under Moore’s leadership. With a talented roster returning and a strengthened coaching unit, Michigan appears poised to remain a national contender in 2025.
