BREAKING NEWS: Wisconsin Badgers’ Rising Star John Tonje Invests $7.9 Million to Transform Homes into Shelters for Homeless Youth
Madison, WI — May 24, 2025
In a bold and inspiring move that is already sending shockwaves through the college sports and philanthropic communities, Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball standout John Tonje has announced a $7.9 million personal investment to convert residential properties into shelters for homeless youth across Wisconsin. At just 23 years old, Tonje is proving that his impact off the court may ultimately rival his accomplishments on it.
The initiative, called “Tonje Homes of Hope,” will begin with the transformation of five multi-unit buildings in Madison, Milwaukee, and Green Bay. These homes will serve as transitional housing and support centers for young people ages 16 to 24 who are facing homelessness, many of whom are aging out of the foster care system or escaping unsafe living conditions.
“This is more than a project — it’s a personal mission,” Tonje said during a press conference held at the Kohl Center. “I’ve seen firsthand how easy it is for young people to fall through the cracks. I want to be part of the solution and offer them the kind of support system that every young person deserves.”
Tonje, a rising senior forward who transferred to Wisconsin last year and quickly became a fan favorite, revealed that the funding comes from a combination of NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) earnings, endorsements, and smart investments. Rather than focus solely on personal luxuries, he has chosen to channel his wealth into a cause that he says has been close to his heart since high school.
“I grew up seeing friends struggle with housing insecurity,” Tonje shared. “It left a mark on me. I made a promise that if I was ever in a position to help, I would.”
The shelters will not only provide beds and meals but will also include access to education programs, mental health services, job training, and mentorship initiatives. Tonje is working with local nonprofits, youth advocates, and city officials to ensure the facilities meet the real needs of the community.
Badgers head coach Greg Gard praised Tonje for his vision and leadership. “John is the embodiment of what we want our players to become — not just great athletes, but great people. He leads by example every day, and this effort takes that to a whole new level.”
The news quickly went viral on social media, with fans, fellow athletes, and public figures applauding Tonje’s commitment. Former Badgers stars and NBA players like Frank Kaminsky and Nigel Hayes shared the story, calling Tonje “an inspiration” and “a true leader on and off the court.”
University of Wisconsin Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin also released a statement, calling the donation “a game-changing act of compassion” and offering the university’s full support.
Tonje has already broken ground on the first site in Madison, which is expected to open by late fall. He hopes the initiative will expand statewide, and eventually serve as a model for other athletes and influencers to follow.
“There’s power in using your platform for good,” Tonje said. “If even one life is changed for the better because of this, it’s all worth it.”
