Steelers’ Tomlin: ‘I Don’t Make Excuses for Failure’

PITTSBURGH — Following a disappointing end to the 2024 NFL season, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media on Thursday with his signature blend of accountability and resilience. Amid swirling speculation about his future and questions regarding the team’s performance, Tomlin made one thing clear: he refuses to make excuses for failure.

“We didn’t get the job done, and that’s on me,” Tomlin said. “I don’t make excuses for failure. Our standard is the standard, and we fell short of that.”

The Steelers ended the season 9-8, narrowly missing the playoffs after a string of inconsistent performances and offensive struggles. While many pointed to injuries, a lack of stability at quarterback, and a porous offensive line as major issues, Tomlin refused to shift blame.

“In this business, you either win or you don’t,” Tomlin stated. “There are always challenges. Every team deals with adversity. What matters is how you respond, and we didn’t respond well enough to be playing in January.”

Tomlin, now the longest-tenured coach in the NFL without a losing season, faced renewed scrutiny this season as fans and analysts questioned the direction of the franchise. Despite that, team president Art Rooney II has indicated that Tomlin’s job is safe, citing his leadership and consistent competitiveness.

When asked about changes in coaching staff or personnel moving forward, Tomlin said evaluations are ongoing. “We’re in the process of looking at everything — coaches, players, schemes. Nothing is off the table. We have to be better, period.”

He also addressed the status of the quarterback position, which saw multiple changes throughout the season. “Stability at quarterback is critical, and we recognize that,” Tomlin said. “We’ll explore all avenues this offseason to ensure we have the leadership and playmaking we need at that position.”

Despite the team’s shortcomings, Tomlin expressed confidence in the future of the organization. “There’s a lot of work to be done, but there’s also a lot to build on. We’ve got young talent, a committed front office, and a passionate fanbase. We’re not going to let one season define us.”

Tomlin’s unyielding approach to leadership has long defined his tenure in Pittsburgh. As he enters what will be his 19th season with the Steelers, his commitment to excellence remains unchanged
