ESPN Report: Legendary Coach Mack Brown Appointed as Texas Longhorns Football Special Advisor
In a move that has sent waves of excitement across the college football landscape, ESPN has reported that legendary coach Mack Brown is returning to the University of Texas in a new capacity. Brown, who led the Longhorns to a national championship in 2005, has been appointed as the program’s Special Advisor for Football Operations.
Brown, 73, is one of the most iconic figures in college football history, having amassed over 275 career wins and securing a place in the College Football Hall of Fame. His return to Austin is being hailed as both a symbolic and strategic decision by the university as the Longhorns prepare for their inaugural season in the SEC in 2025.
According to ESPN’s sources, Brown’s new role will focus on mentoring coaches, advising on recruiting strategies, and acting as a bridge between the athletics department and football operations. He will not be involved in day-to-day coaching or game planning, but his influence is expected to be significant.
“Mack Brown is Texas football,” said Athletic Director Chris Del Conte in a statement. “His leadership, vision, and understanding of the game are unmatched. As we enter a new era of competition, his presence will be an invaluable asset to our program and our staff.”
Brown coached the Longhorns from 1998 to 2013, compiling a 158-48 record and winning two Big 12 championships. His 2005 team, led by quarterback Vince Young, completed a perfect season and captured the national title in one of the most thrilling championship games in college football history—a 41-38 win over USC in the Rose Bowl.
After stepping down from Texas, Brown spent several years as a college football analyst for ESPN before returning to coaching at North Carolina in 2019. He stepped down from that position earlier this year, citing a desire to contribute in a non-coaching role moving forward.
Players and fans alike have celebrated the news, with many expressing enthusiasm on social media. “Coach Brown changed my life,” tweeted former quarterback Colt McCoy. “Texas is lucky to have him back.”
While the Longhorns are now under the leadership of head coach Steve Sarkisian, the addition of Brown offers a boost of wisdom and credibility as the program looks to reclaim national prominence.
“Mack knows what it takes to win at the highest level,” Sarkisian said. “Having him here to guide and support us is a tremendous honor.”
With Brown’s return, Texas is hoping to blend legacy with ambition as it gears up for a new chapter in the SEC.
