NBA Star Crowned Not Just for His Game, But for His Grace: KD’s Class Act Recognized by PBWA

In a league filled with elite athletes and dazzling talent, one player continues to rise above not only for his basketball prowess but also for his poise, professionalism, and principled presence off the court. Kevin Durant — two-time NBA champion, former MVP, and future Hall of Famer — has been named the recipient of the 2025 Professional Basketball Writers Association’s (PBWA) “Magic Johnson Award,” honoring a player who combines excellence on the court with exemplary cooperation and grace in dealing with the media and public.

The PBWA, which represents basketball journalists from across the country, selected Durant for the prestigious award after a season in which he not only delivered on the hardwood but also elevated the dialogue around the sport. Known for his lethal jump shot and smooth scoring ability, Durant also impressed voters with his transparency, thoughtful responses, and respectful relationship with the press.

“The Magic Johnson Award recognizes a player who embodies charisma, class, and communication — qualities that Kevin Durant has consistently shown throughout the season,” said PBWA president Josh Robbins. “He’s been a true professional, win or lose, always willing to speak honestly and respectfully. His influence goes far beyond the box score.”

Durant, who spent the 2024–2025 season with the Phoenix Suns, averaged 26.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game while leading his team to a top-four seed in the Western Conference. But it was his presence after the buzzer that turned heads just as much. Whether addressing tough losses, celebrating teammates, or discussing social issues, Durant brought measured, intelligent insight to every microphone he stood behind.

Durant’s relationship with the media hasn’t always been smooth. Early in his career, he was known to bristle at criticism and occasionally spar with reporters. But over time, he evolved into one of the game’s most articulate and engaging voices — an athlete who now welcomes conversation and strives to elevate the narrative surrounding the game.

“I’ve grown a lot over the years,” Durant said after receiving news of the award. “I’ve learned that how we speak to the media, how we share our stories, really matters. I try to be open and honest, and I respect the work reporters do to tell the game’s story.”

The Magic Johnson Award has been presented annually since 2001, with past winners including Stephen Curry, Damian Lillard, and Shane Battier — players respected not just for their skills but for their integrity and engagement. Durant now joins that elite company.

Teammates and coaches alike praised the honor, calling it well-deserved. Suns head coach Frank Vogel noted, “Kevin’s leadership doesn’t stop when the game clock hits zero. He sets an example for how to represent the game, the team, and himself with dignity.”

In an age when athletes are more scrutinized than ever, Durant’s ability to remain candid, classy, and composed has set a gold standard. The PBWA’s recognition underscores what many already believed: Kevin Durant isn’t just a superstar scorer — he’s a class act whose grace shines just as brightly as his game.

For Durant, the award is less a culmination and more a continuation — proof that greatness is about more than points and trophies. It’s about how you carry yourself when the spotlight is on, and even more when it isn’t.
