Mets to Unveil Bronze Statue Honoring Hall of Fame Broadcaster Jerry Koosman at Citi Field on Sept. 6, 2025
Legendary Voice to Be Immortalized Behind the Mic After 18 Iconic Years with the Mets
In a heartfelt tribute to one of the most beloved figures in New York Mets history, the organization has announced plans to unveil a bronze statue honoring Hall of Fame broadcaster Jerry Koosman on September 6, 2025. The sculpture will be located outside Citi Field and will depict Koosman seated behind a radio microphone, capturing the spirit of the man whose voice became a constant companion to Mets fans for nearly two decades.
The statue will be unveiled during a special pregame ceremony, expected to include current and former players, team executives, broadcasters, and fans. Koosman, who began his broadcasting career with the Mets after retiring from an impressive playing career, spent 18 years calling games, providing insight, humor, and deep baseball knowledge to generations of listeners.
“For so many of us, Jerry Koosman wasn’t just a voice on the radio—he was a trusted friend, a Mets encyclopedia, and a vital part of the team’s identity,” said Mets owner Steve Cohen in a statement. “This statue honors his unparalleled contributions to our organization both on and off the field.”
Although best known nationally for his pitching career, including a critical role on the 1969 “Miracle Mets” championship team, Koosman transitioned seamlessly into the broadcast booth. His articulate commentary and deep understanding of the game made him a favorite among fans and peers alike. In 2023, he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame as a broadcaster, cementing his legacy as one of the game’s great voices.
The statue, which is being crafted by renowned sports sculptor Julie Rotblatt-Amrany, will stand near the main entrance to Citi Field, joining tributes to other Mets legends such as Tom Seaver and Gil Hodges. Rotblatt-Amrany said the design aims to “capture the essence of Koosman’s connection with the fans—his passion, his knowledge, and most of all, his love for the game.”
Koosman himself expressed deep gratitude for the honor. “I’m truly humbled,” he said during a media conference held at Citi Field. “I always saw my job as simply sharing the game I love with the fans I respect so much. To be remembered in this way is more than I ever imagined.”
Fans attending the unveiling ceremony on September 6 will also be treated to special giveaways, commemorative broadcasts, and highlights from Koosman’s most memorable calls. The Mets are encouraging longtime listeners to share their favorite Koosman moments online as part of a digital tribute that will run throughout the 2025 season.
Team broadcaster Howie Rose reflected on Koosman’s impact, saying, “Jerry taught us all what it meant to be both professional and passionate. He never lost the joy for the game or the respect for the people listening.”
As the Mets continue to celebrate their rich history, the addition of a statue honoring Jerry Koosman serves as a reminder of the power of baseball’s voices—those who narrate the magic of each inning, helping fans fall in love with the game all over again.
With his bronze likeness poised to greet fans for generations to come, Jerry Koosman’s voice, spirit, and legacy will forever be a part of Mets lore.
