Texas A&M women’s basketball has announced the addition of seasoned coach Alex Varlan to its staff as an assistant coach, effective May 17, 2025. Varlan brings a wealth of experience from various collegiate programs, most recently serving at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) for three seasons. During his tenure at FAU, he played a pivotal role in the development of standout players like Mya Perry, who led the team in scoring and earned AAC Second Team All-Conference honors, and Aniya Hubbard, the program’s first-ever Conference USA Freshman of the Year .
Head coach Joni Taylor expressed enthusiasm about Varlan’s arrival, stating, “Alex is an extremely well-rounded coach with great experience in scouting and recruiting. He is someone that can wear a variety of different hats in our program. He is extremely competitive, and I look forward to seeing him grow as a professional at Texas A&M and how he impacts our community and team” .
Before his stint at FAU, Varlan served as an assistant coach at Northeastern University during the 2021-22 season, where he contributed to the team’s postseason berth at the Women’s Basketball Invitational. His responsibilities included opponent scouting and recruiting . Prior to that, he spent four years with the Tennessee Lady Volunteers, his alma mater, initially as a video coordinator and later as the director of scouting and analytics. During his time at Tennessee, the program made four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances .
Varlan’s coaching journey also includes experience with the men’s basketball program at Oakland University, where he served as the director of scouting and recruiting innovation, contributing to the team’s first-ever regular-season title in the Horizon League. Additionally, he held roles with the Delaware 87ers of the NBA D-League and interned with the Philadelphia 76ers, working closely with coaching staff and player development .
Expressing his excitement about joining Texas A&M, Varlan said, “I’m thrilled to be joining Coach Joni Taylor and her staff at Texas A&M, one of our nation’s top universities with a storied history and a championship women’s basketball program. Returning home to the SEC, where I grew up learning the ins and outs of women’s basketball from my mentor, Coach Pat Summitt, is incredibly special for me” . Varlan, along with his wife, Kelcie, looks forward to becoming part of the Aggie community.
