Big Hits: Bulldogs Are Officially the Comeback Kings of the NRL; Tedesco’s Final Origin Audition Leaves No.1 Door Open in Two-Horse Race
In a weekend packed with high drama and pivotal performances, the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs have firmly established themselves as the comeback kings of the NRL, while James Tedesco’s final State of Origin audition has left the door wide open in the battle for the NSW Blues’ No.1 jersey.
Bulldogs Snatch Another Late Victory
The Bulldogs pulled off yet another remarkable come-from-behind win, rallying from a double-digit deficit to defeat the Gold Coast Titans 28-24 in a pulsating clash at Belmore Sports Ground. Trailing 24-10 midway through the second half, Cameron Ciraldo’s side surged home with three unanswered tries, capped off by a sensational match-winner from Jacob Kiraz in the 77th minute.
It marked the fourth time this season the Bulldogs have overturned a double-digit deficit to secure victory, underlining their growing resilience and belief. The win moves Canterbury into the top eight, fuelling optimism around a club that has struggled in recent years.
Captain Matt Burton praised the team’s composure under pressure. “We’ve worked hard on our mindset and staying in the contest,” he said post-match. “These are the wins that build belief.”
Tedesco’s Audition Adds to Blues Selection Dilemma
Meanwhile, all eyes were on Sydney Roosters captain James Tedesco as he staked his claim for the NSW fullback role ahead of the 2025 Origin series opener. In a must-watch performance against the Sharks, Tedesco showed flashes of his vintage best — recording a try, two line breaks, and a try-saving tackle in a gritty 26-20 win.
But with Dylan Edwards continuing to shine for the Panthers, Blues coach Michael Maguire faces a genuine two-horse race for the coveted No.1 jersey. While Tedesco brings unmatched Origin experience, Edwards has been the form fullback of the past 18 months.
Former Blues coach Brad Fittler weighed in on the debate during Channel Nine’s post-match coverage. “Teddy was excellent tonight. But Edwards hasn’t put a foot wrong. Maguire has a tough call to make.”
The final squad for Origin I is expected to be announced within the week, and Tedesco’s strong showing may have given selectors plenty to ponder — but not necessarily a definitive answer.
As the NRL season barrels toward the halfway point, momentum is building and narratives are taking shape — and the Bulldogs and Blues’ fullback race are at the center of it all.
