I Am Back: Blake Griffin Returns Home as Associate Head Coach at the University of Oklahoma

Norman, Okla. — In a heartfelt homecoming that has electrified the Sooner Nation, former NBA All-Star and Oklahoma basketball legend Blake Griffin is returning to the University of Oklahoma — not as a player, but as the program’s new associate head coach.

Griffin, 36, officially announced his return Monday morning in a press conference at Lloyd Noble Center, standing beside head coach Porter Moser and athletic director Joe Castiglione. The former Sooner star, who became a household name during his two-year collegiate career from 2007 to 2009, described the appointment as “a dream come true.”

“This university shaped me in so many ways — as a player and as a person,” Griffin said. “To come back and help lead this program into the future is a full-circle moment for me. I’m back home, and I’m ready to get to work.”

Griffin’s college career was nothing short of legendary. As a sophomore in the 2008–09 season, he won every major national player of the year award, including the Naismith and Wooden Awards, and led Oklahoma to the Elite Eight. He was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers, embarking on a decorated professional career that spanned 13 seasons and included six All-Star selections.

Now, Griffin turns to coaching, bringing with him not only elite playing experience but also a deep understanding of the university’s culture and expectations. He is expected to focus on player development, recruiting, and serving as a bridge between the program’s past and future.

“Blake’s passion for the game and his ability to connect with young athletes is unmatched,” said Moser. “He’s not just a name — he’s a leader who understands what it means to wear the crimson and cream.”

Griffin’s return is also being hailed as a significant recruiting advantage for the Sooners, who are looking to reestablish themselves as a national contender. His NBA pedigree and personal charisma are seen as powerful tools to attract top-tier talent.

Students and alumni have flooded social media with excitement since the announcement, with many calling it the biggest hire in the program’s recent history.

While Griffin has never coached at the collegiate level before, those who know him best believe he’s uniquely equipped for the challenge.

“He’s a competitor, a mentor, and a Sooner through and through,” said Castiglione. “We’re thrilled to welcome him back.”

For Griffin, the message is simple: “I’m back — and we’re just getting started.”

The future of Oklahoma basketball just got a little brighter — and a whole lot more familiar.
