BREAKING NEWS: Oklahoma Sooners Star Alyssa Brito Invests $3.6 Million to Create Shelter for Homeless Youth

NORMAN, Okla. — In a stunning and heartfelt move off the field, Oklahoma Sooners softball standout Alyssa Brito has invested $3.6 million to convert a historic Norman residence into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth. The initiative, announced Monday morning, aims to provide housing, mentorship, and rehabilitation services under the newly launched “Sooners Youth Haven.”

Brito, known for her fierce competitiveness on the diamond and her unwavering leadership, said the idea for the shelter came after months of reflection on how she could make a lasting impact in the community that embraced her. The 22-year-old All-American shortstop said the vision solidified during a community outreach event last fall, where she met several young people experiencing homelessness.

“I’ve always believed that our platform as athletes should be used for more than just sports,” Brito stated during a press conference at the future site of the shelter. “Oklahoma has given me so much. This is about giving back to the next generation — the ones who need hope the most.”

The Sooners Youth Haven will occupy a 12,000-square-foot property just a mile from the University of Oklahoma campus. The home, which once served as a historical landmark, is being fully renovated to include 18 bedrooms, therapy rooms, study areas, and a full kitchen and dining facility. The shelter is expected to open in early 2026 and will accommodate up to 30 youth at a time.

Brito’s donation will not only cover the purchase and renovation of the property but also help fund operating costs for at least the first three years. In partnership with local nonprofit organizations, the shelter will provide wraparound services including mental health counseling, academic tutoring, and job training.

OU softball head coach Patty Gasso praised Brito’s initiative, calling it “a shining example of the character that defines our program.”

“What Alyssa is doing goes far beyond the game of softball,” Gasso said. “She’s creating something that will touch lives for generations.”

Brito’s action is already generating national attention, with former and current athletes from across the country applauding her commitment to social change. The NCAA issued a statement acknowledging her contribution as “inspirational leadership in action.”

As the Sooners prepare for another Women’s College World Series run, Brito’s work off the field may end up being her most defining legacy.

“This is just the beginning,” Brito said. “My hope is that others are inspired to step up and change lives too.”
