CONGRATULATIONS: Dabo Swinney, Clemson Tigers Head Coach, Awarded the Prestigious National Football Foundation Gold Medal for Outstanding Contribution to the Game of Football
In a moment of high honor for both Clemson University and college football as a whole, Head Coach Dabo Swinney has been awarded the prestigious National Football Foundation (NFF) Gold Medal. The accolade, regarded as the highest individual honor presented by the NFF, recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the game of football and embody the core values of scholarship, citizenship, and leadership.
Swinney, who has served as head coach of the Clemson Tigers since 2008, was recognized not only for his success on the field but also for his unwavering commitment to developing young men into leaders and citizens of character. Under his leadership, the Tigers have captured two national championships (2016 and 2018), numerous ACC titles, and have become a perennial powerhouse in the college football landscape.
Yet it’s Swinney’s off-the-field impact that stood out to the National Football Foundation. Known for his deeply rooted faith, strong emphasis on academic achievement, and dedication to building a “program of purpose,” Swinney has turned Clemson into more than just a football powerhouse. His program is renowned for its family-oriented culture, commitment to player development, and community service.
“Dabo Swinney is the epitome of what the NFF Gold Medal represents,” said NFF Chairman Archie Manning. “He has achieved at the highest levels in coaching, but more importantly, he’s used the platform of football to shape lives, encourage academic success, and inspire leadership among his players and staff.”
Throughout his tenure, Swinney has consistently emphasized the importance of education, with Clemson boasting one of the highest graduation rates among Power Five football programs. His “PAW Journey” initiative is a model of holistic player development, preparing student-athletes for success beyond the game.
Upon receiving the award, Swinney expressed humility and gratitude. “To be recognized in this way by the National Football Foundation is incredibly humbling,” Swinney said. “This is not just about me—it’s about the countless players, coaches, staff, and families who have poured into Clemson football and made it what it is. Football has changed my life, and I’ve tried to give back everything it has given me.”
Past recipients of the NFF Gold Medal include U.S. Presidents, legendary coaches, and iconic athletes. Swinney now joins this distinguished group, cementing his legacy not just as a coach, but as a transformative leader in American sports.
The award will be officially presented at the NFF Annual Awards Dinner later this year.
