Virginia Tech Strengthens Defense with Linebacker Antwone Santiago’s Transfer from Temple

Virginia Tech has reinforced its linebacker group with the addition of Antwone Santiago, a promising transfer from Temple University. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound linebacker from Meriden, Connecticut, announced his commitment to the Hokies on May 2, 2025. Santiago becomes the sixth player to join Virginia Tech through the transfer portal this spring, bringing both experience and potential to a unit in need of depth and consistency.

Santiago began his college football journey at Temple in 2022, redshirting his freshman year. During the 2023 season, he played in seven games and recorded nine tackles, including one for a loss. His role expanded in 2024, as he appeared in all 12 games, earned his first career start, and collected 25 tackles. His standout moment came when he blocked a punt against UConn, which was recovered and returned for a touchdown, demonstrating his value on special teams.

At Virginia Tech, Santiago joins a linebacker room led by returning players such as Caleb Woodson, Kaleb Spencer, and Jaden Keller. Keller is expected to hold down the Mike linebacker position, while Woodson leads on the weak side. Santiago’s versatility will allow him to compete for significant playing time, particularly as Spencer is capable of playing both inside and outside linebacker positions.

Santiago’s statistical performance highlights his reliability and discipline. He earned strong tackling and run defense grades, with a low missed tackle rate of just 3.6%. These qualities fit well within the Hokies’ evolving defensive schemes under new defensive coordinator Sam Siefkes, who prioritizes flexibility and strong fundamentals.

More than just his on-field skills, Santiago brings a story of adaptation and growth. Once a standout high school wide receiver and safety, he has successfully transitioned into a productive collegiate linebacker. His work ethic and adaptability make him an asset as Virginia Tech continues to reshape its roster and aim for stronger defensive showings in the upcoming season.
