Liverpool backed to finally secure winter signing of £50.2million midfielder – Report
During the summer, if anyone had suggested to a Liverpool supporter that the team would sit five points clear at the top of the Premier League table after 11 games and be the only side with a flawless record in the Champions League at this stage, they likely would have dismissed the idea as overly optimistic.
Yet, under the guidance of their new manager, Liverpool find themselves in precisely that position—five points ahead of Manchester City and nine points ahead of Arsenal.
Many had anticipated that the Reds would need time to adapt to Arne Slot’s tactical approach. However, the players at Anfield have embraced his philosophy seamlessly, delivering impressive results that have drawn widespread attention.
Jamie Carragher, known for his candid commentary, remarked on Stick to Football that Arne Slot may rarely encounter a scenario like this, where both Manchester City and Arsenal are struggling, giving Liverpool a clear advantage. Carragher stressed the importance of capitalizing on this opportunity and urged the club to strengthen the squad in the January transfer window.
The former Liverpool defender specifically advocated for signing Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi. Speaking on the matter, Carragher said:
“Go for it. Zubimendi is the player Slot wanted. They’ve done brilliantly with Gravenberch, who’s been fantastic, but if Zubimendi is the one you need, then make the move. This kind of opportunity doesn’t come around often. Even in three years, you could find City five points ahead by Christmas. Seize the moment.”
Liverpool had previously pursued Zubimendi during the summer transfer window and were prepared to meet his £50.2 million release clause. However, the Spanish midfielder opted to remain with Real Sociedad at the time.
Zubimendi’s skill set aligns perfectly with Liverpool’s current needs. While Ryan Gravenberch has impressed this season, his strengths are better suited to a No.8 role rather than a No.6. Bringing in Zubimendi could provide the defensive stability required in midfield, allowing Gravenberch to play to his strengths further up the pitch.
As the winter transfer window approaches, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool will renew their efforts to sign the 25-year-old. If they do, fans will hope Zubimendi accepts the offer this time, as his addition could significantly enhance the team’s prospects
moving forward.
