Longhorn Legacy Returns: Legendary Coach Mack Brown Rejoins Texas as Senior Advisor to Steer Program Through SEC Era

Austin, TX — In a monumental move that’s stirring excitement across the college football landscape, the University of Texas has officially announced the return of legendary coach Mack Brown. The former Longhorns head coach, who led Texas to a national championship in 2005 and built a dominant program during his 16-year tenure, is rejoining the university as a senior advisor to the football program. His return comes as Texas prepares for its much-anticipated transition into the Southeastern Conference (SEC) this fall.

Brown’s new role as senior advisor is expected to focus on mentorship, strategic development, and providing a steady, experienced voice within the athletic department during one of the most pivotal eras in Texas football history. With the Longhorns set to begin competition in the SEC — widely regarded as the toughest conference in college football — Brown’s presence is seen as a critical asset for both head coach Steve Sarkisian and the broader program.

“It’s an incredible honor to return to the place that means so much to me and my family,” said Brown in the official university statement. “Texas is home, and I’m proud to help support this program as it steps into a new chapter. The move to the SEC brings both challenges and opportunities, and I’m excited to contribute however I can.”

Brown compiled a 158-48 record at Texas from 1998 to 2013, including two Big 12 Championships and seven consecutive 10-win seasons from 2001 to 2009. His 2005 team, led by quarterback Vince Young, achieved a perfect season and a dramatic victory over USC in the Rose Bowl, securing the program’s first national title in 35 years. After stepping down in 2013, Brown later returned to coaching at the University of North Carolina, where he revitalized the Tar Heels’ program before retiring again after the 2023 season.

University of Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte emphasized the significance of Brown’s return. “Mack brings unmatched experience and a deep love for this university. He understands what it takes to succeed at the highest level, and his wisdom will be invaluable as we navigate the SEC transition.”

Fans and alumni have expressed overwhelming support for the move, viewing Brown’s return as a symbolic and strategic step toward restoring Texas’ national prominence. As the Longhorns gear up for their first SEC season, the program now has a revered leader back in its corner — someone who not only understands the Texas standard, but helped define it.

With Mack Brown back in burnt orange, the Longhorn legacy is not just remembered — it’s actively shaping the future.
