Florida Gators Celebrate NFL Signings, with Special Recognition for Graham Mertz’s Leadership and Grit

GAINESVILLE, FL — April 30, 2025 — The University of Florida Gators football program is beaming with pride as several former players officially transition to the professional ranks following the conclusion of the 2025 NFL Draft. While the excitement surrounding the new NFL signees continues to energize the Gator Nation, one name stood out in particular during the team’s celebration: quarterback Graham Mertz.

Mertz, who transferred from Wisconsin to Florida ahead of the 2023 season, was not only lauded for his on-field performance but also honored for his unwavering leadership, mental toughness, and the indelible mark he left on the program. Though Mertz’s path to the NFL has yet to be finalized, Florida’s coaching staff, players, and fans took the opportunity to recognize the impact he had as a cornerstone of the Gator locker room.

A Celebratory Weekend for Gator Football

The Gators saw multiple players selected across all three days of the NFL Draft, with others quickly signing undrafted free agent contracts in the hours that followed. Defensive stars, offensive playmakers, and special teams standouts all found new homes in the league, reinforcing the program’s reputation as a breeding ground for pro-caliber talent.

Head coach Billy Napier addressed the media during a post-draft event, praising the dedication of the entire outgoing class. “This group of young men represents what it means to be a Florida Gator. They’ve worked tirelessly in the weight room, in the classroom, and on the field. Their commitment has raised the bar for everyone who follows.”

Among the long list of contributors, Napier gave special mention to Mertz, calling him “a model of resilience and professionalism.” He continued, “Graham’s influence went far beyond stats or highlight plays. He helped reshape our culture with his work ethic, character, and selflessness.”

Graham Mertz: More Than a Quarterback

When Mertz arrived in Gainesville in 2023 after three seasons at Wisconsin, there were questions about how well he’d adapt to the SEC and whether he could lead a young and evolving Gator roster. Those questions were answered quickly. Mertz started 11 games in his first season before a shoulder injury cut his campaign short. Before the setback, he had already begun establishing himself as one of the most respected leaders on the team.

His accurate passing, calm demeanor, and command of the offense provided the Gators with much-needed stability under center. But it was his attitude in the face of adversity—especially following the injury—that truly endeared him to teammates and coaches.

“I’ve never seen a guy so committed to the team even when he wasn’t playing,” said offensive lineman Kingsley Eguakun. “He was there at every meeting, every practice, helping the younger guys, studying film like he was still the starter. That’s who Graham is.”

Mertz returned for the 2024 season and delivered one of the most efficient quarterback campaigns in recent Gator history. Despite battling through multiple injuries and heavy pressure from elite SEC defenses, he consistently gave his team a chance to win and earned the admiration of fans for his toughness and leadership.

Leaving a Lasting Legacy

As Mertz now prepares for the next chapter—whether that’s in the NFL or another opportunity in football—his legacy at Florida is firmly cemented.

“Graham exemplified the values we hold dear here: dedication, resilience, and class,” said Coach Napier. “He never made excuses. He never took shortcuts. He just showed up every day and gave us everything he had.”

Players echoed that sentiment, with several younger quarterbacks citing Mertz as a mentor who took the time to teach and encourage without ego. “He taught me what it means to prepare like a pro,” said redshirt freshman Austin Simmons. “He treated everyone with respect and brought a level of maturity that really changed the locker room.”

Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin also offered praise, calling Mertz “one of the best examples of what a student-athlete should be.” Mertz, who earned his degree while balancing the demands of SEC football, was also active in community outreach, often volunteering at youth clinics and hospital visits.

A Gator Forever

While Mertz’s name wasn’t called during the draft weekend, there is growing buzz among scouts that he could land a free-agent deal or a minicamp invite. Regardless of what lies ahead, the Florida Gators are making it clear: Graham Mertz will always be a Gator.

As the team wraps up its spring workouts and eyes the future, Mertz’s influence continues to echo in the meeting rooms, weight room, and practice fields.

“He left this place better than he found it,” said Coach Napier. “That’s the ultimate legacy.
