WHAT A GREAT HONOR: Indiana Pacers Unveil World-Breaking Oscar Robertson Statue in Front of Crispus Attucks High School to Celebrate Legendary Achievements
In a monumental tribute to basketball royalty, the Indiana Pacers have officially unveiled a groundbreaking statue of Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson, immortalizing one of the game’s most transformative figures. The stunning bronze sculpture was revealed in front of Indianapolis’ historic Crispus Attucks High School — the very school where Robertson’s legacy began.
Hundreds of fans, community leaders, and NBA legends gathered in an emotional ceremony on Thursday morning, as the statue was unveiled to rousing applause. Towering at 12 feet and crafted with intricate detail, the statue captures Robertson mid-dribble — a powerful symbol of his dominance on the court and pioneering impact off of it.
Oscar Robertson, often referred to as “The Big O,” is widely considered one of the greatest players in basketball history. A 12-time NBA All-Star, MVP, Olympic gold medalist, and the first player to average a triple-double over a full season, Robertson’s influence extends far beyond the court. He also played a pivotal role in securing free agency rights for future generations through his landmark lawsuit against the NBA.
“This statue isn’t just for me — it’s for every young kid who dares to dream, just like I did walking the halls of Crispus Attucks,” said Robertson, fighting back tears. “I’m humbled and honored.”
Pacers owner Herb Simon called the statue “a testament to excellence, resilience, and Indiana pride.” The sculpture, created by acclaimed artist Brian Hanlon, was lauded as a “world-breaking” design for its interactive features, including a touch-activated audio guide narrating Robertson’s historic moments.
The site is expected to become a key landmark for Indiana sports history and youth inspiration.
In honoring Oscar Robertson, the Pacers have cemented a permanent reminder of greatness — a man who not only changed the game, but also helped change the world.
