CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — In a powerful and emotional announcement that has Tar Heel Nation buzzing, the University of North Carolina has revealed plans to unveil a bronze statue of legendary forward Tyler Hansbrough outside the iconic Dean E. Smith Center. The statue will honor one of the most decorated and beloved players in the history of college basketball.

Set to be unveiled during the 2025-2026 season, the statue will stand as a symbol of Hansbrough’s unmatched work ethic, relentless intensity, and unwavering loyalty to UNC. Nicknamed “Psycho T” for his fearless style of play, Hansbrough left an indelible mark on the Tar Heels program from 2005 to 2009.

He is UNC’s all-time leading scorer, a 2009 NCAA National Champion, 2008 National Player of the Year, and a four-time First-Team All-ACC selection — the only player in ACC history to earn that honor four consecutive years.

UNC Athletics Director Bubba Cunningham said, “This statue is more than a tribute. It’s a reminder to future generations of what passion, heart, and hard work look like. Tyler gave everything for Carolina.”

Hansbrough, now an ACC Network analyst, expressed deep gratitude: “I’m incredibly honored. Chapel Hill is my home. To have a statue outside the Dean Dome — it’s surreal. I hope it inspires every kid who dreams of playing here.”

The unveiling ceremony is expected to draw thousands of fans and former teammates, marking yet another historic chapter in the Tar Heels’ proud legacy.

From bloodied jerseys to championship glory, Tyler Hansbrough epitomized what it means to wear Carolina Blue. Now, his legacy will stand tall forever in Chapel Hill.
