LSU Tigers Welcome Back Legend Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf as Assistant Coach
BATON ROUGE, La. — The LSU Tigers men’s basketball program has made a major move to bolster its coaching staff, announcing Wednesday the return of program legend Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf as an assistant coach. The former LSU standout and NBA veteran brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and a deep connection to the Tigers’ storied history.
Abdul-Rauf, formerly known as Chris Jackson during his collegiate years, was one of the most electrifying players in LSU history. From 1988 to 1990, he lit up the court at Pete Maravich Assembly Center, earning national recognition for his scoring prowess and dynamic playmaking. He was a two-time consensus First-Team All-American and averaged 29 points per game across his two seasons with the Tigers, setting multiple freshman scoring records.
Now, more than three decades later, Abdul-Rauf returns to the place where his basketball journey began, this time bringing his unique perspective and expertise to the sidelines. His role will focus on player development, mentoring guards, and helping to instill a winning mindset in a young and evolving LSU squad.
“Having Mahmoud back is more than just a basketball move — it’s a cultural one,” said head coach Matt McMahon. “He represents excellence, perseverance, and a commitment to craft that’s unmatched. Our players are going to benefit tremendously from his experience, both on and off the court.”
Abdul-Rauf’s NBA career spanned nine seasons, most notably with the Denver Nuggets and Sacramento Kings. Known for his deadly shooting and unshakeable confidence, he posted career averages of 14.6 points and 3.5 assists per game. Off the court, he gained attention for his principled stances and advocacy for social justice — qualities LSU believes will further enrich the character and resilience of their athletes.
Since retiring from the NBA, Abdul-Rauf has played internationally, competed in the BIG3 league, and dedicated much of his life to speaking engagements, youth mentorship, and training the next generation of basketball talent.
“This is home,” Abdul-Rauf said in a statement. “LSU gave me my first opportunity, and now I’m honored to give back. I want these players to understand the privilege and responsibility that comes with wearing these colors.”
With LSU looking to build momentum heading into the next season, the addition of Abdul-Rauf signals a renewed commitment to the program’s roots, excellence, and future.
