Ambitious Plans Unveiled to Transform Red and Charline McCombs Field into a Premier Softball Facility

AUSTIN, Texas – June 2025 — The University of Texas has unveiled ambitious plans to elevate Red and Charline McCombs Field, home of the Texas Longhorns softball team, into one of the premier softball stadiums in the nation. The announcement comes on the heels of the program’s historic success, including a ninth-straight Women’s College World Series (WCWS) berth, and underscores the university’s commitment to excellence both on and off the field.

The ground-breaking redevelopment project is slated to begin construction in late 2025, with completion targeted for the 2027 season. University officials describe the project as a “transformational investment” in the future of Longhorns softball, designed to provide a world-class experience for student-athletes, fans, and the broader community.

The newly envisioned stadium will feature expanded seating to accommodate up to 4,000 fans, up from the current 1,200-seat capacity, along with modern amenities such as state-of-the-art locker rooms, training and recovery facilities, indoor batting cages, luxury suites, and fan-friendly concessions. Enhanced lighting, video boards, and press facilities will also support the program’s national exposure and media coverage.

“This is about more than just a new stadium—it’s a commitment to our student-athletes, our fans, and the future of Texas Softball,” said UT Athletic Director Chris Del Conte. “We’re building a home that matches the championship pedigree of this program.”

Head coach Mike White, who has guided the team to unprecedented heights since arriving in 2019, praised the announcement. “This facility will be a game-changer. It’s going to give our athletes the best tools to train, recover, and perform—and it’ll give our fans a true home-field advantage.”

The project will be funded through a combination of private donations, university funding, and athletic department revenues. Major donors, including longtime supporters of Texas Athletics, have already pledged support, with naming rights for portions of the facility still available.

Located in the heart of the UT campus, McCombs Field has served as the team’s home since 1998. While it has undergone several upgrades over the years, this will be the most comprehensive renovation in its history.

Once completed, the new McCombs Field is expected to stand alongside the nation’s top collegiate softball venues, enhancing recruiting, improving competitive performance, and strengthening the Longhorns’ position as a national powerhouse.

“This is history in the making,” said Del Conte. “We’re not just dreaming big—we’re building big.”
