June 3, 2025 โ As the 2025 Womenโs College World Series ramps up in Oklahoma City, all eyes are on the nationโs No. 1 team โ the Oklahoma Sooners. Perched atop ESPNโs national rankings and defending back-to-back national champions, the Sooners are gearing up for one of their toughest postseason gauntlets yet.
Led by veteran head coach Patty Gasso, Oklahoma enters the WCWS with an impressive 55โ4 record, blending elite pitching, explosive offense, and championship pedigree. This year, however, the road to a potential four-peat wonโt be easy. On deck are formidable matchups against some of the NCAAโs most dangerous programs: Florida, Tennessee, BYU, and others hungry for an upset.
โOur team thrives in these moments,โ Gasso said in a pre-series press conference. โWe respect every opponent, but weโve been preparing all year for this level of competition. The standard never changes โ compete with excellence.โ
Florida, seeded fifth nationally, brings a deep roster and aggressive offense that has dismantled top pitchers all season. Tennessee, another SEC powerhouse, boasts one of the tournamentโs top pitching staffs and a knack for clutch play. Meanwhile, BYU has emerged as a Cinderella contender, riding a late-season surge and fearless attitude into the WCWS spotlight.
Still, Oklahoma enters with confidence. All-American pitcher Jordy Bahl has posted a sub-1.00 ERA and anchors a deep rotation that also includes Nicole May and freshman phenom Ryan Deal. Offensively, sluggers Jayda Coleman, Tiare Jennings, and Kinzie Hansen headline a lineup that leads the nation in home runs and on-base percentage.
โEvery game feels like a championship game now,โ said Jennings, a senior infielder and team captain. โBut we love the pressure. Itโs what being a Sooner is all about.โ
The Sooners will also benefit from playing just 30 minutes from their Norman campus, with Oklahoma Cityโs USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium often packed with crimson-clad fans โ turning neutral ground into a home-field advantage.
This yearโs WCWS is being hailed as one of the most competitive fields in recent memory. But if history and rankings are any indicator, the Sooners remain the team to beat.
โWeโve won before,โ said Gasso, โbut this group is writing its own story.โ
With history within reach and elite opponents looming, Oklahoma begins its championship chase knowing the margin for error is razor-thin โ and their legacy is on the line.
