Oklahoma Sooners Unveil New Patty Gasso Statue and Renew Original One: A Timeless Tribute to the Greatest Coach in NCAA Softball History
NORMAN, Okla. – June 1, 2025 — The University of Oklahoma paid tribute to one of the most iconic figures in college sports history on Saturday, as the Sooners unveiled a brand-new statue of legendary softball coach Patty Gasso outside Love’s Field. The ceremony also included a revitalization of the original statue, further cementing her legacy as the greatest coach in NCAA softball history.
Hundreds of fans, former players, university officials, and alumni gathered under sunny skies to witness the emotional unveiling. The new statue, crafted by acclaimed sculptor Harold Holden, captures Gasso mid-celebration—arms raised triumphantly, a nod to the countless championships and unforgettable moments she’s brought to the Sooner faithful.
The original statue, erected in 2016 after Gasso’s third national title, has also been meticulously restored and repositioned near the entrance to the team’s indoor training facility. Together, the two statues tell the story of a coach whose impact spans decades, generations, and countless lives.
“This is more than a statue—it’s a story of resilience, belief, and excellence,” said OU President Joseph Harroz Jr. during the ceremony. “Patty Gasso is not only the winningest coach in NCAA softball history, she’s the heart of this university’s spirit and commitment to greatness.”
Gasso, who took over the Sooners program in 1995, has led Oklahoma to eight national championships, including four consecutive titles from 2021 to 2024. Under her leadership, the Sooners have become a dynasty, earning 17 Women’s College World Series appearances and producing dozens of All-Americans.
Visibly emotional, Gasso thanked her family, coaching staff, and the athletes who’ve worn the crimson and cream.
“This day isn’t about me,” she said. “It’s about all the women who chose to believe in something bigger than themselves. I’m honored and humbled. And I’m not done yet.”
Gasso’s legacy goes far beyond wins and trophies. She’s been a pioneer for women’s sports, a mentor to young coaches, and a fierce advocate for equity in athletics. Her influence has reshaped college softball, elevating the sport to unprecedented heights in viewership, popularity, and respect.
With both statues now standing proudly in Norman, the University of Oklahoma has immortalized a coach whose name is synonymous with greatness. For Patty Gasso and Sooner Nation, it’s a timeless tribute—etched in bronze, and forever in the hearts of those she’s inspired.
