HISTORY MADE: Texas Softball defeats second best program in college softball (2) Oklahoma, 4-2, to advance to the Semifinals of WCWS

HISTORY MADE: Texas Softball Stuns No. 2 Oklahoma, 4-2, to Reach WCWS Semifinals

In a defining moment for the Texas Longhorns softball program, No. 1 seed Texas defeated No. 2 seed Oklahoma 4-2 on Saturday in the Women’s College World Series (WCWS), advancing to the semifinals and ending the Sooners’ dominant postseason run. The victory marks a historic achievement, as the Longhorns took down one of the most decorated programs in college softball history.

The Red River rivalry took center stage on the sport’s biggest stage, and Texas delivered with poise and power. The Longhorns used timely hitting, exceptional pitching, and flawless defense to hand the Sooners just their second WCWS loss in the past four years.

Texas ace Mac Morgan turned in a stellar performance in the circle, holding Oklahoma’s potent lineup in check through six innings. Morgan allowed just two runs and worked out of multiple jams, showcasing the grit that has defined the Longhorns’ 2024 season.

The Longhorns struck first in the third inning with a clutch two-out RBI double from Alyssa Washington, followed by a run-scoring single by Reese Atwood to take a 2-0 lead. Oklahoma responded with two runs in the fourth to even the score, but Texas was far from finished.

In the top of the sixth, Mia Scott reignited the Longhorns with a leadoff single and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Katie Cimusz. Freshman standout Viviana Martinez then delivered the knockout blow with an RBI single to make it 4-2.

Reliever Citlaly Gutierrez shut the door in the final inning, retiring the final three Sooners to seal the biggest win of Texas’ postseason run. The victory not only sends the Longhorns to the WCWS semifinals but also snaps Oklahoma’s 18-game winning streak in WCWS play—a stretch that dates back to 2021.

Texas head coach Mike White praised his team’s resilience: “We knew we had to be nearly perfect to beat a team like Oklahoma, and I couldn’t be prouder of how our players executed. This is what we’ve been building toward.”

With the win, Texas now sits one victory away from the WCWS championship series. The Longhorns will face the winner of an elimination game between UCLA and Stanford, needing just one more win to punch their ticket to the final round.

For a program that has long played in the shadow of its fiercest rival, Saturday’s win was more than just a step toward a national title—it was a statement. Texas softball has arrived, and history was made in Oklahoma City.
