BREAKING: Steelers Star T.J. Watt Declares Boycott of NFL Pride Night: “Focus Should Be on the Ball, Not the WOKE”

PITTSBURGH — In a bold and controversial move, Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt announced on Thursday that he will boycott the NFL’s upcoming Pride Night initiative, citing concerns over what he described as a shift away from football and toward political messaging.

Speaking during a press availability after practice, Watt said, “On the field, everyone should be focusing on the ball, not the WOKE. We’re here to play football, represent our city, and compete at the highest level — not to participate in political or social campaigns during games.”

Watt, a team captain and former Defensive Player of the Year, emphasized that he respects all individuals regardless of background but believes the NFL is increasingly mixing entertainment with activism in ways that distract from the game itself.

“I’ve got nothing against anyone. I respect all fans and teammates,” Watt said. “But I also believe in boundaries. There’s a time and place for everything, and for me, game day should be about football.”

The NFL’s Pride Night is part of a broader league-wide initiative aimed at promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, including support for the LGBTQ+ community. Many teams plan to wear special patches or decals and hold in-stadium events in recognition of the occasion.

While Watt’s stance has drawn criticism from some fans and advocacy groups, it has also earned support from others who argue that sports should remain apolitical.

The Steelers organization has not yet issued an official response to Watt’s comments, but sources say internal discussions are underway. League officials also declined to comment immediately.

Watt’s boycott could add to the ongoing national debate over the role of social messaging in professional sports, a topic that continues to divide fans, players, and executives across the league.
