Congratulations, Vols! Tennessee Appoints Football Legend Willie Gault as New Assistant General Manager

In a bold and exciting move, the University of Tennessee has appointed former football legend Willie Gault as its new Assistant General Manager for the Volunteers football program. This appointment not only reunites one of the program’s most iconic figures with his alma mater, but also signals a deep commitment to legacy, leadership, and elevating the program’s future with proven excellence.

Gault, who starred for the Volunteers in the late 1970s and early 1980s, is widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes in Tennessee football history. Known for his world-class speed and game-changing playmaking ability, Gault was a standout wide receiver and kick returner during his college career. He later enjoyed a successful NFL tenure, most notably as part of the legendary 1985 Chicago Bears Super Bowl team.

Now, nearly four decades after he last wore the orange and white as a player, Gault returns to Knoxville in a leadership role with an opportunity to make an even greater impact off the field.

“I’m honored to return to Tennessee and be part of this incredible football family once again,” said Gault in an official statement. “The University of Tennessee shaped my life in so many ways. Now, I want to give back and help build the kind of program that inspires excellence, not just in wins and losses, but in character, development, and leadership.”

Gault’s new position as Assistant General Manager will place him at the center of the program’s day-to-day operations, with a focus on player development, alumni engagement, recruiting strategy, and program branding. His experience as a professional athlete and his reputation as a leader on and off the field are expected to bring a valuable perspective to the Vols’ evolving football infrastructure.

Head coach Josh Heupel expressed excitement about Gault’s addition to the staff. “Willie Gault is a Tennessee legend, and having someone of his caliber join our team is a huge win for the entire program. His insight, experience, and deep love for this university will be invaluable as we continue to elevate Tennessee football.”

Gault’s hire also underscores a broader trend in college athletics: programs bringing back alumni legends to help shape the future. By integrating past greatness into present-day leadership, schools are building continuity and culture in a way that resonates deeply with fans, recruits, and current players alike.

Former teammates and NFL peers have also praised the move. “Willie’s always been a class act,” said former Bears teammate Mike Singletary. “He knows what winning takes. Tennessee is lucky to have him back in the building.”

As the Vols continue to rise under Coach Heupel, the addition of Gault adds another layer of prestige and purpose to the team’s mission. For a program with a proud history and a bright future, this is more than just a headline—it’s a homecoming.

Whether it’s mentoring young players, forging stronger alumni ties, or helping attract the next wave of elite talent, Willie Gault is poised to leave a lasting legacy in this next chapter of Tennessee football.

Welcome back, Willie. Rocky Top is glad to have you home.
