Breaking News: Michigan Wolverines Legend Commemorated with Statue at Home Stadium

Ann Arbor, MI – In a stirring tribute to one of college football’s most iconic figures, the University of Michigan unveiled a statue today honoring legendary Wolverines player Charles Woodson outside Michigan Stadium. The ceremony, attended by university officials, former teammates, and thousands of fans, marked a momentous occasion in the storied history of Michigan football.

Woodson, who won the Heisman Trophy in 1997 as a two-way player excelling at both cornerback and wide receiver, is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in college football history. His electrifying performances helped lead the Wolverines to a national championship that same year. Now, nearly three decades later, his legacy has been cast in bronze for generations to admire.

The life-size statue, placed near the northeast entrance of “The Big House,” captures Woodson in his signature pose — arms raised in triumph after a game-defining play. The sculpture was crafted by renowned sports artist Omri Amrany, known for his work on several iconic sports monuments across the country.

“This is not just a statue of a player — it’s a symbol of excellence, perseverance, and Michigan pride,” said Athletic Director Warde Manuel during the unveiling. “Charles Woodson exemplified what it means to be a Wolverine, and this statue ensures his legacy will continue to inspire.”

Woodson himself was present and emotional as he addressed the crowd. “It’s hard to put into words what this means,” he said. “To come back to this place, where so many memories were made, and to see this — it’s surreal. I hope every kid who walks by this statue knows that dreams are possible with hard work and faith.”

Former teammates and Michigan football alumni including Tom Brady, Dhani Jones, and head coach Lloyd Carr were also in attendance, sharing stories of Woodson’s leadership, competitiveness, and charisma. Fans roared as the statue was unveiled, many chanting his name and wearing his iconic No. 2 jersey.

The statue is the first in a new initiative by the university to celebrate its most influential athletes and historical contributors. Future honorees are expected to be announced in the coming months.

As Michigan football prepares for another highly anticipated season, today’s unveiling stands as a powerful reminder of the program’s proud tradition — and the individuals like Charles Woodson who helped shape it.

The legacy of No. 2 now stands forever in front of The Big House.
