Colt McCoy Returns to Texas Longhorns: A Homecoming Years in the Making

Austin, TX – Texas Longhorns football has always held a special place in Colt McCoy’s heart—and now, after years away from the Forty Acres, the legendary quarterback is making a celebrated return to the program that helped shape his career and inspired millions.

On Thursday, the University of Texas officially announced that McCoy will rejoin the Longhorns in a new role, serving as a special advisor to the coaching staff and mentor to quarterbacks. The move brings full circle a remarkable journey for McCoy, whose name is etched in Texas football history as one of the greatest to ever wear burnt orange.

“For me, Texas football is home,” McCoy said at a press conference at Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium. “This program has given me so much—from life lessons to lifelong friendships. I’m grateful for the opportunity to give back and help guide the next generation of Longhorns.”

McCoy, who played at Texas from 2006 to 2009, holds multiple school records, including most career wins as a starting quarterback (45) and highest career completion percentage (70.3%). He led the Longhorns to the 2009 BCS National Championship game and finished as the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy that same year.

His return is being hailed as both sentimental and strategic. The current Texas coaching staff, led by head coach Steve Sarkisian, believes McCoy’s presence will be a significant asset—not just on the field, but also in fostering a winning culture rooted in tradition, work ethic, and leadership.

“Colt understands what it means to wear this jersey,” Sarkisian said. “He’s lived it. Having someone of his caliber around—someone who has not only achieved so much but has done it the right way—adds tremendous value to what we’re building.”

Since his college days, McCoy went on to a 13-year NFL career with stints in Cleveland, San Francisco, Washington, the New York Giants, and Arizona. Known for his resilience and intelligence, he earned a reputation as one of the league’s most dependable backup quarterbacks, often called upon in high-pressure situations.

Though McCoy officially announced his NFL retirement earlier this year, he made it clear that his competitive fire and love for football have never waned. Rather than stepping away from the game entirely, he felt drawn back to his roots in Austin.

“I’ve always believed that football is more than just a game—it’s a platform,” McCoy said. “At Texas, I learned how to lead, how to persevere, and how to represent something bigger than myself. Now I get to pass that on.”

Fans have already embraced the news with overwhelming enthusiasm. On social media, former teammates, current players, and alumni celebrated the move, expressing excitement about McCoy’s influence on the team.

With the Longhorns entering a new era and preparing for their SEC debut, McCoy’s return couldn’t come at a more pivotal time. As the program looks to reclaim national prominence, the wisdom and presence of a Longhorn legend might be just what Texas needs.

For Colt McCoy, it’s not just a job—it’s a homecoming. And for Texas fans, it’s a reminder that legends never truly leave—they just find new ways to lead.
