BREAKING NEWS: Boston Red Sox Rising Star Marcelo Mayer Invests $8.5 Million to Transform House Into Shelter for Homeless Youth in Boston
Boston, MA – May 23, 2025
In a stunning and heartfelt act of generosity, Boston Red Sox rising star Marcelo Mayer has announced a personal investment of $8.5 million to transform a historic Boston mansion into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth. The facility, set to open in early 2026, aims to provide housing, education, therapy, and career development programs to vulnerable young people across the city.
At just 22 years old, Mayer is not only making a name for himself on the baseball field, but also as a passionate advocate for social change. During a press conference at Fenway Park this morning, Mayer described the project as “a dream years in the making,” emphasizing his desire to give back to the community that welcomed him with open arms.
“I’ve been blessed with opportunities that many kids never get,” said Mayer. “This isn’t just about giving them a roof over their heads. It’s about helping them build a future—safe, stable, and full of promise.”
The shelter, which will be called “Second Inning House,” will be located in the heart of Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood. The sprawling 19th-century property—formerly a private residence—will be renovated to include 45 individual bedrooms, a commercial kitchen, classrooms, counseling spaces, and a rooftop garden. It will also host workshops in financial literacy, job readiness, and arts education.
The initiative is being developed in partnership with Boston-based nonprofit YouthRise and the City of Boston’s Department of Housing and Community Development. According to city officials, Mayer’s contribution will cover more than 85% of the project’s total cost.
“Marcelo Mayer is setting an example not just for athletes, but for all Bostonians,” said Mayor Michelle Wu. “This shelter will be a sanctuary for young people in crisis. His compassion and leadership are exactly what we need.”
YouthRise CEO Tamika Johnson said Mayer approached her organization nearly a year ago with his vision. “He didn’t just want to write a check,” Johnson said. “He spent time with our kids, visited shelters, asked questions, and challenged us to think bigger. This project is the result of months of collaboration and heart.”
Homelessness among youth in Boston has been a persistent issue, with over 3,000 unaccompanied minors estimated to be experiencing housing instability as of 2024. Advocates say the shortage of safe, supportive housing options is one of the biggest barriers these youth face.
By creating Second Inning House, Mayer hopes to offer more than just temporary relief. “The name says it all,” he said. “Everyone deserves a second chance—another shot at success, happiness, and hope.”
Red Sox teammates, fans, and local leaders have praised Mayer’s initiative on social media, calling it a “game-changer” and a “beacon of hope.”
Construction is expected to begin this summer, with a projected grand opening in March 2026—just in time for the new MLB season.
For Marcelo Mayer, it’s clear: his greatest impact may come not just from his bat, but from his heart.
