CONGRATULATIONS: Michigan Football Appoints American Football Legend Charles Woodson as New Assistant General Manager

Ann Arbor, MI — In a major move that has electrified the college football community, the University of Michigan football program has officially appointed former NFL star and Michigan legend Charles Woodson as the new Assistant General Manager. The announcement was made early Thursday morning by Athletic Director Warde Manuel, sparking celebration among Wolverine fans and alumni across the nation.

Charles Woodson, one of the most decorated and respected figures in the history of college and professional football, is returning to his alma mater in a leadership capacity that many see as a perfect fit. The 1997 Heisman Trophy winner and Pro Football Hall of Famer brings with him a wealth of experience, insight, and passion for the game — and most importantly, a deep-rooted love for Michigan football.

“Charles is more than just a football icon — he is Michigan through and through,” said Manuel in a press statement. “His leadership, vision, and football intellect will be invaluable as we continue to build a championship-caliber program. We are honored to welcome him back home.”

Woodson, 48, had a legendary career at Michigan from 1995 to 1997, where he became the only primarily defensive player in history to win the Heisman Trophy. He helped lead the Wolverines to a national championship in 1997, capturing the hearts of fans with his electrifying play at cornerback, wide receiver, and punt returner.

Following his college career, Woodson went on to have an 18-year NFL career with the Oakland Raiders and Green Bay Packers, earning nine Pro Bowl selections, a Super Bowl title, and the 2009 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021.

“This is a full-circle moment for me,” Woodson said during a press conference in Ann Arbor. “Michigan shaped me — as a player, as a man, and as a leader. I’m honored to come back and contribute to the program that gave me everything. I want to help these young men chase greatness, just like I did.”

As Assistant General Manager, Woodson will work alongside Michigan’s new General Manager, overseeing recruiting strategy, player development, alumni relations, and team culture. His presence is expected to significantly boost Michigan’s recruiting edge and reinforce its national brand.

“Bringing someone of Charles’ stature into our leadership team sends a clear message — Michigan is committed to excellence at every level,” said Head Coach Sherrone Moore. “He’s been where our players dream of going, and he knows what it takes to get there.”

Reactions have poured in from across the football world. Former teammates, current players, NFL stars, and fans alike have taken to social media to congratulate Woodson and Michigan on the appointment.

“Best move Michigan could have made,” tweeted ESPN analyst and fellow Michigan alum Desmond Howard. “Charles is a legend, and now he’s back where he belongs.”

With this bold new hire, the Wolverines continue to build momentum after a strong season and aim to cement their place among college football’s elite. The addition of Charles Woodson to the front office marks not only a new chapter for Michigan Football but also a powerful reunion between a legend and the institution that helped define him.

For Wolverines fans, the message is loud and clear: The future is now — and it’s in very good hands.
