BREAKING: Charles Woodson Returns to Michigan as Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Backs Mentor

Ann Arbor, MI – May 20, 2025 — In a move that has electrified the college football world, Michigan football legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Charles Woodson is returning to his alma mater as Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Backs Mentor. The University of Michigan officially announced the hire early Tuesday morning, marking a homecoming nearly three decades in the making.

Woodson, the only primarily defensive player to ever win the Heisman Trophy (1997), will join new head coach Sherrone Moore’s staff in a pivotal leadership role. His presence is expected to have an immediate impact on recruiting, player development, and team culture, especially in the secondary — a unit he once dominated on the field.

“I am beyond honored and excited to be back in Ann Arbor,” Woodson said in a statement. “This place shaped me as a player and as a man. It’s time to give back to the program that gave me everything.”

Woodson starred at Michigan from 1995 to 1997, leading the Wolverines to a share of the national championship in his final season. Known for his game-breaking ability on defense, offense, and special teams, he went on to a legendary 18-year NFL career with the Oakland Raiders and Green Bay Packers, earning nine Pro Bowl selections and a Super Bowl title.

Since retiring in 2015, Woodson has remained visible as an analyst for FOX Sports and ESPN, while also pursuing entrepreneurial ventures. His return to Michigan marks his first official coaching role, though insiders say he has long mentored young athletes and remained connected to the Wolverines’ program.

“Charles is a Michigan legend, and more importantly, a leader of men,” said Head Coach Sherrone Moore. “His football IQ, presence, and championship mentality will resonate deeply with our players. He understands what it takes to be elite at this level.”

The hire comes at a crucial time for Michigan, which is navigating a transitional phase following Jim Harbaugh’s departure to the NFL earlier this year. Moore, formerly the team’s offensive coordinator, is putting together a staff that combines youth, energy, and pedigree — and Woodson’s arrival underscores that vision.

Recruits and alumni alike have already taken to social media to celebrate the move, calling it a “game-changer” for the Wolverines.

As Michigan eyes another Big Ten title and a potential College Football Playoff run, the return of one of its all-time greats adds a powerful new dimension — and a familiar face — to its championship quest.
