Netflix Doc to Probe Connor Stalions and Michigan Sign-Stealing Scandal

Netflix is diving into one of college football’s most controversial stories with a new documentary centered on the Michigan sign-stealing scandal — and the man at the heart of it, Connor Stalions.

The streaming giant announced the upcoming documentary, which will investigate allegations that rocked the University of Michigan’s football program in late 2023. The film will explore the covert operation allegedly orchestrated by Stalions, a former low-level Michigan staffer, who is accused of running a widespread scheme to steal opponents’ play signals.

Stalions was thrust into the national spotlight when reports emerged that he had bought tickets to games across the Big Ten and beyond, sending associates to film opposing sidelines. The footage was then allegedly analyzed to decode hand signals used by coaches, giving Michigan an unfair strategic edge.

While head coach Jim Harbaugh and Michigan officials denied knowledge of Stalions’ actions, the scandal triggered an NCAA investigation and drew criticism from across the college football landscape. Harbaugh served a suspension during the 2023 season, although he was not directly tied to the operation.

Netflix’s documentary — currently titled Signal: The Connor Stalions Story — aims to peel back the layers of the scheme, featuring exclusive interviews, game footage, expert analysis, and previously unseen communications. According to producers, the film will not only recount how the scandal unfolded but also examine broader questions about ethics, competitiveness, and enforcement in NCAA sports.

“Connor Stalions’ story is as much about ambition and secrecy as it is about football,” said a spokesperson for the production team. “It’s a window into the high-stakes world of college athletics, where the line between preparation and rule-breaking can get dangerously blurry.”

Stalions, who resigned from his role at Michigan in November 2023, has mostly stayed out of the public eye since the investigation began. However, sources close to the production suggest he participated in interviews for the documentary, offering his first extended comments on the matter.

The release date for the film has not yet been announced, but it is expected to debut in late 2025. The documentary will be part of Netflix’s ongoing push into sports storytelling, following the success of series like Untold and Quarterback.

As college football prepares for another season, the documentary promises to reignite debate around competitive fairness and the lengths programs will go to gain an edge. For fans and critics alike, it offers a closer look at a scandal that shook one of the sport’s most storied programs.
