BREAKING: Michigan State Lands Miami Transfer Guard Divine Ugochukwu, Bolstering Backcourt Depth

In a significant addition to its backcourt, Michigan State men’s basketball has secured a commitment from Miami transfer guard Divine Ugochukwu. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound combo guard announced his decision on Sunday, choosing the Spartans over other interested programs such as Texas Tech and USC .

Ugochukwu, a native of Sugar Land, Texas, played his freshman season with the Miami Hurricanes during the 2024–25 campaign. Despite a challenging season for the Hurricanes, he managed to make a notable impact, averaging 5.3 points, 2.3 assists, and 1.9 rebounds per game over 28 appearances, including 16 starts . His performance demonstrated his potential as a reliable contributor at the collegiate level.

Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo, entering his 30th year at the helm, expressed enthusiasm about Ugochukwu’s addition to the roster. “Divine brings a level of experience and versatility that will be invaluable to our team,” Izzo stated. “His ability to play both guard positions and his commitment to continuous improvement align perfectly with our program’s values.”

Ugochukwu’s transfer comes at a pivotal time for the Spartans, who are looking to build upon their impressive 2024–25 season that culminated in an Elite Eight appearance . With the departure of key players and the integration of new talent, including transfers Trey Fort from Samford and Kaleb Glenn from Florida Atlantic, Ugochukwu’s arrival is expected to bolster the team’s depth and maintain its competitive edge in the Big Ten Conference.

In his high school career at Clements High School, Ugochukwu was a three-star recruit, recognized among the top 20 players in Texas. His decision to transfer to Michigan State reflects his desire to develop further under the tutelage of a seasoned coaching staff and to contribute to a program with a rich basketball tradition.

“I’m excited to join the Spartan family and to be part of a program that values hard work and excellence,” Ugochukwu shared. “I look forward to growing as a player and helping the team achieve its goals.”

As the Spartans prepare for the upcoming season, Ugochukwu’s addition is anticipated to provide both immediate contributions and long-term benefits. His experience in the ACC and his versatility on the court will be assets as Michigan State aims to continue its success and pursue championship aspirations.

With a blend of returning talent and new additions, the Spartans are poised for another competitive season. Ugochukwu’s commitment underscores the program’s appeal to talented players seeking growth and success at the highest levels of college basketball.
