Madison, Wisconsin — Wisconsin Badgers Marching Band Crowned World’s Top Marching Band by ESPN in Historic 2025 Ranking

In a groundbreaking moment for college music and performance arts, ESPN has officially named the University of Wisconsin’s Badgers Marching Band as the world’s top marching band. The announcement, made during ESPN’s 2025 “College GameDay” season finale, marks the first time a collegiate marching band has been recognized globally by the sports network.

The Wisconsin Badgers Marching Band, long celebrated in the Big Ten Conference for its high-energy performances and signature “Fifth Quarter” post-game celebrations, now stands atop a prestigious list that includes powerhouse programs from across the United States and elite international ensembles.

“This recognition is an extraordinary honor,” said Dr. Corey Pompey, director of the Wisconsin Marching Band. “Our students dedicate themselves to excellence both musically and physically. To have that commitment acknowledged on a global stage is truly humbling.”

According to ESPN, bands were evaluated based on musical precision, creativity in show design, tradition, audience engagement, and overall cultural impact. The Badgers excelled in every category, earning praise for their innovative halftime performances, unwavering school spirit, and crowd-pleasing antics.

Highlights from the 2024–2025 season included a genre-spanning tribute to American music, a halftime show integrating live drone effects above Camp Randall Stadium, and several viral performances that garnered millions of views on social media. The band’s energy, pageantry, and consistent excellence left a lasting impression on fans and judges alike.

ESPN analysts noted that the Wisconsin band has redefined what it means to be a modern collegiate marching band — seamlessly blending tradition with bold innovation. “They’re not just a halftime show,” said ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit. “They’re a national phenomenon.”

Founded in 1885, the Badgers Marching Band has been a fixture of Wisconsin football, known for its “high step” marching style, raucous brass, and crowd-favorite renditions of “On, Wisconsin!” and “If You Want to Be a Badger.” Its beloved “Fifth Quarter,” a freewheeling musical celebration after games, has become a tradition cherished by generations of fans.

Following the announcement, congratulations poured in from Wisconsin alumni, fellow college bands, and even international musicians. The university plans to commemorate the achievement with a spring gala and a special halftime tribute during the 2025 football season.

As the band gears up for its next chapter, this historic honor cements its status not only as the pride of Madison, but as a global symbol of collegiate musical excellence.
