Michigan Football Introduces Sherrone Moore as New Head Coach

Ann Arbor, MI – The University of Michigan officially introduced Sherrone Moore as its new head football coach this week, ushering in a new era for one of college football’s most storied programs. Moore, who served as the Wolverines’ offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, now takes the reins from former head coach Jim Harbaugh, who departed for the NFL in January.

The announcement comes after weeks of speculation following Harbaugh’s exit to become head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. Moore, 37, becomes the 21st head coach in Michigan football history and the first Black head coach to lead the program.

“Sherrone is a tremendous leader, a brilliant football mind, and someone who understands what it means to represent Michigan,” said Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel at the press conference. “He has earned this opportunity through hard work, loyalty, and an unwavering commitment to excellence both on and off the field.”

Moore took over head coaching duties temporarily during the 2023 season when Harbaugh served multiple suspensions. During that time, Moore led the Wolverines to key victories, including a dramatic 24-15 win over Penn State and a 30-24 triumph over Ohio State, which helped secure Michigan’s third consecutive Big Ten Championship and a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Moore’s impact during those games was widely praised by players, fans, and analysts alike. His calm demeanor, strategic play-calling, and emotional connection with his players were seen as key factors in Michigan’s continued success.

At his introductory press conference held inside Schembechler Hall, Moore expressed gratitude and humility.

“I am truly honored and humbled to be named the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines,” Moore said. “This program means everything to me. I want to thank Coach Harbaugh for his mentorship, Warde Manuel for his trust, and most of all, our players, who are the heart of this team.”

Moore also emphasized his vision for the future, stating that Michigan would continue to build on its recent success with a focus on player development, accountability, and championship standards.

“We’re going to win with character, with toughness, and with a relentless pursuit of greatness,” Moore said. “This is Michigan — the expectation is excellence, and I embrace that.”

Moore’s journey to the top of the Michigan program is a testament to his work ethic and dedication. A former offensive lineman at Oklahoma, Moore began his coaching career as a graduate assistant before making stops at Louisville and Central Michigan. He joined Michigan’s staff in 2018 as the tight ends coach before being promoted to offensive line coach and eventually offensive coordinator.

Under Moore’s guidance, Michigan’s offensive line won the Joe Moore Award — given to the nation’s best offensive line — in both 2021 and 2022. The Wolverines also consistently ranked among the top rushing offenses in the country, thanks in part to Moore’s schemes and player development.

Players and alumni quickly voiced their support for the hire on social media. Star running back Donovan Edwards tweeted, “Coach Moore is the real deal. Michigan is in great hands.” Former All-American offensive lineman Jon Runyan Jr. added, “Couldn’t be happier for Coach Moore. He’s earned this moment. The future is bright.”

Moore faces the challenge of maintaining Michigan’s national prominence following its 2023 national championship run. With a strong returning core and a top-10 recruiting class, expectations will remain high.

“I know what this job entails, and I’m ready for it,” Moore said. “We’re going to compete every day — on the field, in the classroom, and in our community. That’s what Michigan is about.”

As the Wolverines prepare for the 2025 season, Moore will have the opportunity to make his mark on a program rich in tradition. With spring practices concluded and fall camp on the horizon, fans will be watching closely to see how the Sherrone Moore era begins in Ann Arbor.

“We’re going to honor the past, thrive in the present, and build for the future,” Moore said. “Go Blue.”
