The Los Angeles Angels spoiled Clayton Kershaw’s much-anticipated 2025 season debut, defeating the Dodgers 11-9 on Saturday night at Dodger Stadium. The victory secured the Angels’ first series win at their crosstown rivals’ home since 2019, marking a significant milestone in the Freeway Series.
Kershaw, returning from multiple offseason surgeries on his shoulder, knee, and toe, struggled in his first start since August 2024. The three-time Cy Young Award winner allowed five runs on five hits over four innings, walking three and striking out two. He threw 38 pitches in a taxing first inning alone, showing signs of rust and command issues.
The Angels capitalized on Kershaw’s struggles and the Dodgers’ bullpen vulnerabilities. Logan O’Hoppe led the charge with a career-high five RBIs, including a pivotal three-run homer in the seventh inning that turned a 7-6 Dodgers lead into a 9-7 Angels advantage. Taylor Ward and Matthew Lugo also homered, contributing to the Angels’ offensive surge.
Despite a strong offensive performance from the Dodgers, including four hits from Freddie Freeman and home runs by Andy Pages and Enrique Hernández, they couldn’t overcome the Angels’ late rally. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expressed his disappointment, stating, “We don’t have what they’ve got over there,” highlighting the need for improvements to remain competitive.
The Angels’ victory not only spoiled Kershaw’s return but also underscored their resurgence in the Freeway Series. With the series win secured, the Angels aim for a sweep in the final game, while the Dodgers look to regroup and address their pitching challenges moving forward.
