Michigan State football has bolstered its secondary by acquiring Canadian safety Devynn Cromwell through the NCAA transfer portal. Cromwell, who previously played for the University of Guelph in Ontario and Texas Tech, brings a wealth of experience and athleticism to the Spartans’ defense.
During his tenure at Texas Tech, Cromwell appeared in nine games, starting two, and recorded 20 tackles, with 17 of those coming in his starts against Arizona and Baylor. Despite missing four games due to injury, his performance showcased his potential as a reliable defensive back. Prior to his time in the NCAA, Cromwell was a standout at the University of Guelph, earning second-team Ontario University Athletics All-Star honors with 26 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, an interception, and five pass breakups in his junior season.
Cromwell’s journey from Canadian university football to the NCAA highlights his determination and adaptability. At Guelph, he was recognized as a U Sports second-team All-Canadian as a redshirt freshman, leading the conference with seven pass breakups. His transition to Texas Tech marked him as one of the first Canadians to join the Red Raiders in recent history.
Standing at 6 feet and weighing 200 pounds, Cromwell’s physical attributes, combined with his speed—evidenced by a 4.38-second 40-yard dash—make him a formidable presence in the secondary. His versatility allows him to contribute both in pass coverage and run support, as well as on special teams.
Michigan State’s acquisition of Cromwell comes amid a broader strategy to strengthen the team’s roster through the transfer portal. The Spartans have added several players to address key positions, aiming to enhance their competitiveness in the upcoming season.
As Cromwell integrates into the Spartans’ defensive scheme, his international experience and proven track record are expected to make an immediate impact. His addition not only fills a crucial role in the secondary but also brings leadership and a unique perspective to the team.
