Top-Ranked 5-Star QB C.J. Stroud Shocks Team with Decommitment, Flips to Texas Longhorns over Auburn and Alabama
In a stunning move that has sent shockwaves across the college football landscape, top-ranked 5-star quarterback C.J. Stroud has officially decommitted from his previous school and announced his new commitment to the Texas Longhorns. The decision comes after months of speculation surrounding the future of one of the most sought-after prospects in the nation.
Stroud, widely considered the No. 1 quarterback in the 2025 recruiting class, had been heavily linked to both Auburn and Alabama throughout his recruitment process. He had previously committed to Auburn in late 2024, a decision that thrilled Tigers fans and added firepower to their quarterback room. However, after an official visit to Austin and what sources describe as a “game-changing” pitch from head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff, Stroud had a change of heart.
“This was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make,” Stroud said in a statement posted to social media Tuesday morning. “I have great respect for Auburn and everything they’ve done for me during the recruiting process. But after spending time with the Texas coaches and players, I just felt a different level of connection. I’m excited to say I’m 100% committed to the University of Texas.”
Stroud’s flip is a monumental victory for the Longhorns, who now land a quarterback with elite arm talent, athleticism, and a proven track record at the high school level. He threw for over 4,000 yards and 48 touchdowns last season, while also rushing for another 700 yards and 11 scores, making him one of the most dynamic dual-threat QBs in the country.
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian, known for developing top-tier quarterbacks, now adds another blue-chip player to his impressive recruiting class. With Stroud’s commitment, the Longhorns now have the No. 2-ranked class in the country and a real shot at overtaking Georgia for the top spot.
While Auburn and Alabama had been considered front-runners for months, sources close to the situation indicate that Texas’ offensive system, NIL potential, and a strong bond with quarterback coach AJ Milwee played significant roles in Stroud’s decision.
The decommitment is a major blow to Auburn, which had built its class around Stroud as a foundational piece. Alabama, which had hoped to make a late push, now turns its attention to other elite quarterback targets.
Stroud is expected to enroll early at Texas in January 2026 and will compete for playing time as a true freshman.
This commitment marks a seismic shift in the 2025 recruiting cycle and cements Texas as a rising powerhouse in the new SEC landscape.
