Nebraska Quarterback Dylan Raiola Donates $7.5 Million to Create Shelter for Homeless Youth

Lincoln, Neb. — May 14, 2025

In a heartfelt act of generosity, Nebraska football quarterback Dylan Raiola has donated more than $7.5 million to convert a historic Lincoln residence into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth, marking one of the most significant philanthropic gestures ever made by a college athlete.

The shelter, named “Raiola House,” will provide transitional housing, meals, mental health resources, educational support, and job training for young people aged 14 to 21 who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of being unhoused. Located in central Lincoln, the home will undergo a full renovation set to begin this summer, with the shelter expected to open its doors by early 2026.

Raiola, widely known for his five-star recruitment ranking and status as one of college football’s rising stars, said in a statement that the decision to donate stemmed from personal reflection and a desire to serve the community that embraced him.

> “Football has given me a platform, but my purpose is bigger than the game,” Raiola said. “Lincoln welcomed me with open arms. I want to give young people who are struggling a place where they feel seen, safe, and supported. Everyone deserves a chance to chase their dreams.”

The announcement stunned the sports world, as NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) earnings by college athletes are typically spent on personal development, training, or brand expansion. Raiola’s donation, largely funded through endorsement deals, personal earnings, and partnerships with philanthropic organizations, is believed to be one of the largest single donations by an active student-athlete in NCAA history.

University of Nebraska Chancellor Rodney Bennett praised Raiola’s contribution, calling it “a profound act of leadership and compassion.”

> “Dylan Raiola has not only proven himself on the field, but now he’s shown us what it means to lead off the field,” Bennett said. “This project will have a lasting impact on lives throughout Nebraska.”

The need is great. According to the Lincoln Homeless Coalition, more than 300 youth experienced some form of homelessness in Lancaster County in 2024 alone. Experts say the real number may be significantly higher due to underreporting.

“This is about more than a shelter,” said Anne Martinez, executive director of the nonprofit Hope First, which will manage day-to-day operations of Raiola House. “This is about breaking cycles of trauma and opening doors to opportunity. Dylan’s gift will help us do just that.”

The home, originally built in the 1920s, will feature dorm-style rooms, common areas, a garden, study spaces, and a technology center. Staff will include social workers, counselors, and mentors from local organizations. Programming will include high school and GED support, financial literacy, and job placement assistance.

Though only 20 years old, Raiola has already emerged as a figure of national interest, both for his leadership under center and now for his humanitarian efforts.

Social media lit up following the announcement, with current and former athletes, fans, and advocates praising his maturity and heart.

“Dylan Raiola just redefined what it means to be a student-athlete,” one post read.

As Nebraska football prepares for the upcoming season, Raiola remains focused on more than just winning games.

“I want my time here to matter,” Raiola said. “If I can help someone find stability, hope, and a future, then that’s the biggest win I could ask for.”
