GOOD NEWS: Oklahoma Sooners and Tampa Bay Buccaneers Unite to Honor Football Icon with Official “Lee Roy Selmon Day”

In an inspiring display of unity and reverence, the University of Oklahoma and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have come together to honor one of football’s most beloved legends. Lee Roy Selmon, the Hall of Fame defensive end who left an indelible mark on both college and professional football, is being celebrated with the creation of an official “Lee Roy Selmon Day.”

The announcement, made during a joint ceremony at Raymond James Stadium, was filled with heartfelt tributes, video montages, and powerful testimonials from former teammates, coaches, and community leaders. A commemorative video celebrating Selmon’s life and legacy captured the essence of a man who embodied excellence not only on the field, but in every facet of his life.

Selmon, the first-ever draft pick for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1976 and a cornerstone of the franchise’s early identity, earned six Pro Bowl selections and a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1995. His career in the NFL followed a historic college run with the Oklahoma Sooners, where he helped secure back-to-back national championships in 1974 and 1975 and won the prestigious Outland Trophy.

But the accolades only tell part of Selmon’s story. Known for his humility, integrity, and commitment to serving others, Selmon was just as dominant in the community as he was on the gridiron. After retiring from football, he served as an athletic administrator at the University of South Florida and became a successful businessman and restaurateur, founding the popular “Lee Roy Selmon’s” chain.

“Lee Roy’s impact goes beyond stats and trophies,” said Sooners Athletic Director Joe Castiglione. “He represented the very best of college athletics and professional sports—strength, leadership, and grace.”

Buccaneers co-owner Darcie Glazer Kassewitz echoed those sentiments. “Lee Roy was the heart of the Bucs. His legacy is felt not only in our team’s history but throughout the Tampa Bay community. ‘Lee Roy Selmon Day’ is a tribute to a man who made us all better.”

The newly declared day will be observed annually, with events planned in both Norman, Oklahoma, and Tampa, Florida, to honor Selmon’s enduring legacy.

From dominating offenses to uplifting communities, Lee Roy Selmon redefined what it means to be a champion. With this heartfelt tribute, the Sooners and Buccaneers ensure his spirit continues to inspire future generations.
