HOMECOMING HERO: Drew Lock Returns to Missouri Tigers as Director of Player Development, Bringing NFL Experience, Leadership, and Passion Back to His Alma Mater in a Powerful Move That Aims to Inspire, Mentor, and Elevate the Next Generation of Mizzou Stars

COLUMBIA, Mo. — One of Missouri football’s most beloved sons is coming home. In a move that has Tiger fans roaring with pride, former star quarterback and NFL veteran Drew Lock has been named the new Director of Player Development for the Missouri Tigers. The announcement, made official by the university this week, signals a homecoming filled with promise, leadership, and a vision to shape the future of Mizzou football.

Lock, who lit up Faurot Field from 2015 to 2018, returns to Columbia not as a player but as a mentor, bringing with him a wealth of NFL experience, unwavering passion, and deep roots in the Missouri program. After five seasons in the NFL with the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks, Lock is stepping into a new role where his impact could be even more profound — off the field and in the locker room.

“It’s an incredible honor to come back to the place that shaped me,” Lock said in a university press release. “Missouri gave me the platform to live out my dreams, and now I’m committed to giving back — to help develop not just great players, but great men.”

As Director of Player Development, Lock will focus on mentoring current student-athletes, guiding them through the challenges of college life, and preparing them for success beyond football. His responsibilities will include personal development, leadership training, career planning, and helping players make the most of their college experience — on and off the field.

Head coach Eli Drinkwitz praised the decision as a major win for the program. “Drew is the embodiment of what it means to be a Missouri Tiger,” Drinkwitz said. “His work ethic, leadership, and understanding of today’s athlete make him an invaluable asset. He’s walked the walk — from being a highly-touted recruit to leading this program, to playing in the NFL. He knows what it takes, and our guys are going to benefit tremendously from that.”

Lock’s college career is etched in Missouri history. A four-year starter, he threw for over 12,000 yards and 99 touchdowns, setting an SEC single-season record for passing touchdowns (44) in 2017. His swagger, arm talent, and dedication to the team made him a fan favorite and a natural leader in the locker room.

Now, Lock’s presence will add a new dynamic to the program — a bridge between eras, a link between legacy and future.

For current players, Lock represents a living example of what’s possible with commitment and resilience. For recruits, he’s a sign that Mizzou invests in its own, valuing development at every level. For fans, his return is a feel-good moment that strengthens the emotional bond between the program and its storied past.

While his playing days may be behind him, Drew Lock’s next chapter might be his most impactful yet. As he steps into his new role, one thing is clear: Mizzou football just got stronger — not just with a hero returning home, but with a leader ready to elevate the next generation.

And for the Missouri Tigers, that’s a win on every level.
