Bristol Rovers Announce 2025 Scholarship Class with Eight New Academy Signings

Bristol Rovers Football Club has officially welcomed eight promising young talents into its Academy ranks, as they signed two-year scholarships set to begin in July 2025. The special signing ceremony took place at The Memorial Stadium, celebrating the achievements and commitment of the next generation of Rovers stars.

The 2025 scholarship class includes Will Wilson, Henry De-long, Excel Iwhiwhu, Adedeji Odumboni, Jack Toogood, Jay Horgan, Ciaran O’Donnell, and Woody Cole. Each of the players has already made significant contributions to the club’s U18 team this season, with several featuring in the FA Youth Cup victory over Badshot Lea.

Academy Manager Byron Anthony opened the ceremony by congratulating the scholars and outlining the expectations and values of the Football Club.

“Congratulations,” Anthony said. “There are many players who would love to be in this room tonight. When you become a scholar, you’re not just part of the programme—you become an employee of the Football Club. You take on its values and give your best every day.”

The evening included presentations by key Academy staff, including Head of Athletic Development Brad Stalley, who introduced the off-season training programme, and League Football Education’s Will Morford, who spoke about the educational aspect of the apprenticeship. Professional Development Phase Lead Coach Bobby-McKenzie Black wrapped up with an overview of the U18 player development pathway.

Each scholar was recognised individually, with their families present to witness the milestone moment. Descriptions of the players highlighted their unique attributes:

Will Wilson, a confident and vocal goalkeeper, joined in the U15 season and has played across the U16 and U18 teams.

Henry De-long, a strong central defender, has been part of the Academy since U12 and has received regional recognition from the FA and FAW.

Excel Iwhiwhu, a versatile and athletic defender/midfielder, has featured in all age groups and earned attention at FA Regional Talent Camps.

Adedeji Odumboni, a tough and composed central midfielder, joined mid-U14 and quickly became a key part of the U18 setup.

Jack Toogood, a tactically astute midfielder, has been with the Academy since its early stages and featured prominently in the U18 squad.

Jay Horgan, a creative midfielder with an eye for goal, joined at U9 and continues to impress across U16 and U18 levels.

Ciaran O’Donnell, a direct and energetic winger, began at U13 and has consistently progressed through the Youth Development Phase.

Woody Cole, a clinical and versatile forward, joined at U15 and made an impact by scoring in both the FA Youth Cup and Gloucester Senior Cup.

The club also expressed gratitude to the grassroots and previous clubs that helped shape these players before their time with Bristol Rovers.

The new scholars will now look ahead to continued development and competition at U18 level, as they aim to take the next big step toward a professional football career.
