Mark Ingram II Back in Tuscaloosa: Alabama’s First Heisman Trophy Winner Joins Crimson Tide Coaching Staff
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Mark Ingram II, the University of Alabama’s first Heisman Trophy winner and a foundational figure in the early years of Nick Saban’s historic run in Tuscaloosa, is officially returning to the Capstone — this time on the sidelines. The former Crimson Tide star has joined the Alabama football coaching staff in a player development role, the university announced Friday.
Ingram, who etched his name into college football history by winning the Heisman in 2009, played a pivotal role in launching the Crimson Tide’s modern dynasty. That season, he rushed for 1,658 yards and 17 touchdowns, helping Alabama to its first national title under Saban with a 14-0 record capped by a BCS Championship win over Texas.
Now, Ingram is back to help shape the next generation of Alabama greats. His role will center on mentoring student-athletes, guiding them in their personal development, and helping them adjust to the demands of life both on and off the field. It’s a natural fit for the former NFL running back, known throughout his career for his leadership, energy, and charisma.
“Coming back to Tuscaloosa feels like coming home,” Ingram said in a statement. “This university changed my life, and Coach Saban played a huge part in shaping the man I became. I’m excited to give back to this program and help young men develop not just as athletes, but as people.”
Ingram’s hiring comes at a time of transition for Alabama football. With Kalen DeBoer taking the reins from the legendary Saban, Ingram’s return adds a familiar face and a bridge to the program’s storied past. DeBoer praised the hire, calling Ingram “an Alabama legend who understands the culture of excellence we want to maintain and grow.”
After leaving Alabama, Ingram enjoyed a successful 12-year NFL career with the New Orleans Saints, Baltimore Ravens, and Houston Texans. A three-time Pro Bowl selection, he rushed for over 8,000 yards and 65 touchdowns in the NFL. More recently, he’s been a football analyst for FOX Sports and the Big Noon Kickoff show, showcasing his passion for the game and insight into the player’s mindset.
Ingram’s return adds emotional weight for Alabama fans who remember the early years of Saban’s dominance. As the Crimson Tide look to forge a new path under DeBoer, having one of the program’s most beloved alumni on staff is a promising sign for the future.
“Roll Tide forever,” Ingram added. “Let’s get to work.”
