BREAKING: Pittsburgh Pirates Part Ways with Manager Derek Shelton Amidst Disappointing Season

The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced the dismissal of manager Derek Shelton, effective immediately. This decision comes after a challenging 12–26 start to the 2025 MLB season, marking the team’s worst performance in recent years. Shelton’s tenure, which began in 2020, concluded with a cumulative record of 306–440. Despite efforts to rebuild, the Pirates have not reached the postseason since 2015.

Challenges Under Shelton’s Leadership

Throughout Shelton’s five-plus seasons, the Pirates struggled to achieve consistent success. The team’s performance was hindered by a lack of offensive production and pitching inconsistencies. In the 2025 season, the Pirates ranked near the bottom in both runs scored and team ERA, further exacerbating the team’s challenges. Additionally, off-field controversies, including a tragic incident where a fan was seriously injured falling into the outfield, contributed to the mounting pressure on the organization.

Management’s Response

General Manager Ben Cherington acknowledged Shelton’s dedication and contributions to the team but emphasized the necessity for change. “We appreciate Derek’s hard work and commitment, but a change was needed to move the organization forward,” Cherington stated. Pirates owner Bob Nutting echoed these sentiments, expressing the need for a new direction to revitalize the team’s performance and fan engagement.

Don Kelly Appointed as Interim Manager

In a move to stabilize the team, the Pirates have promoted bench coach Don Kelly to interim manager. Kelly, a Pittsburgh native and former MLB player, has been with the organization since 2019. He brings a wealth of experience, having previously served as a coach with the Houston Astros before joining the Pirates. Kelly’s deep ties to the Pittsburgh community and familiarity with the team’s dynamics make him a promising candidate to lead the Pirates through the remainder of the season.

Looking Ahead

The Pirates are set to face the Atlanta Braves in a three-game home series beginning Friday, marking Don Kelly’s first series as interim manager. The organization remains hopeful that Kelly’s leadership will inspire the team to improve its performance and restore competitiveness in the National League Central division. As the season progresses, the Pirates will evaluate their strategies and make necessary adjustments to build a foundation for future success.
