Pittsburgh Steelers Coaches Immediately Blown Away by Will Howard’s Drive and Preparation
PITTSBURGH โ Will Howard didnโt waste a single moment after being selected in the 2025 NFL Draft. The former Kansas State quarterback, now donning the black and gold of the Pittsburgh Steelers, immediately set the tone for his NFL career by requesting the team’s playbook the very next day. According to Steelers coaches, it was the first sign that Howard might be built a little differently than most rookies.
โHe called and asked for the playbook before we even got back to the facility,โ one assistant coach told reporters. โThatโs not something you see every day. He didnโt want to wait for minicamp. He wanted to get to work right away.โ
The 6-foot-5, 240-pound quarterback has already turned heads in rookie minicamp, not only with his physical tools โ which include a strong arm and surprising mobility โ but with his mental approach. Coaches have praised his early command of the offense and his willingness to take ownership of his development.
โHeโs attacking this opportunity with a veteran mindset,โ said quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan. โItโs not just that heโs learning the playbook quickly โ itโs how heโs asking questions, understanding the why behind each call, each read. Thatโs rare at this stage.โ
Howard, who transferred to Kansas State after starting his college career at Penn State, put together a stellar final season, throwing for over 3,000 yards and 27 touchdowns while leading the Wildcats to a Big 12 Championship appearance. His combination of experience, leadership, and pro-ready traits made him a Day 2 draft target for Pittsburgh, who were seeking a developmental quarterback with long-term starter potential.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin echoed the excitement, noting that Howardโs early behavior reflects the kind of culture Pittsburgh is trying to build.
โWillโs urgency and professionalism stood out from the jump,โ Tomlin said. โWhen a young guy shows that kind of initiative, it sets a tone. Heโs got a long road ahead, but heโs starting it the right way.โ
While Howard is expected to compete for a backup role behind current starter Russell Wilson, the Steelers view him as a potential future face of the franchise. If his first few days are any indication, Howard is prepared to earn that title โ not just with his arm, but with his mindset.
โHeโs already spending hours in the film room,โ one coach added. โWe didnโt have to ask. Heโs just doing it. Thatโs what makes the great ones great.โ
Time will tell, but early signs suggest Will Howard may be just what Pittsburgh was looking for.
